Don’t mind the wax cast off, first ride after a new bath.
Nice! I’m joining the wax party now as well.
Is there an advantage to using wax on a bike the only sees trainer use?
I assume there’s still less wear and it’s a lot cleaner.
hah, thanks! There is a 12-speed compatibility page (12-speed Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 Di2 and 11-speed Di2 compatibility), but I do need to update the general compatibility page.
Something to do this week! :). Any other suggestions/feedback/requests, let me know and I’ll get it done.
(But yeah, mix 12-speed Di2 as you see fit - except the 12-speed MTB derailleurs, those are e-bike only)
^This.
If we assume indoor trainer use is pretty much ‘ideal’ conditions, then a waxed chain that saw only that use case would last a stupid amount of time, as in probably several years. Of course, the cleanliness is a huge bonus, too.
The problem is shifting quality, because the min/max sprocket size of a derailleur is a function not just the capacity provided by the cage length, but also by the angle that the parallelogram swings at. For a derailleur with a large max sprocket size the smaller the cassette you fit the further the guide pulley ( no amount of B-tension adjustment can fix) sits from the biggest sprocket, this has an impact on shifting quality.
I did a minor dig but clearly missed that page.
Thanks for the proper link and work on keeping it up to date. Resources like this have my full appreciation and respect as I try to do similar work for rockers
Awesome, that is an angle (punny) I had totally overlooked. Makes perfect sense and I have seen the angles present in various RD’s before by failed to recognize the delta between them beyond the cages. Great food for thought, thanks
I just got a new Cervelo Soloist but had to go 105 Di2 due to availability and am considering a partial or whole upgrade from 105 Di2 to Ultegra Di2. For those who have experience, would you recommend the upgrade, or just ride the 105 stuff for a while? FWIW I’m typically a Force/Ultegra/Chorus level customer for the last 20 years or so and take pretty good care of my stuff but do expect a good level of performance and longevity but I don’t have any experience with the current 12 speed stuff.
The only real differences, apart from the weight, are the front derailleur and the shifters.
The 105 front derailleur is essentially the 11-speed Di2 FD with some small tweaks. The Ultegra/DA front derailleurs are smaller and shift slightly faster (would you notice in real life… probably not).
The 105 shifters do not have any accessible SD300 ports or satellite shfiter ports. You cannot connect other shifters or satellite shifters to the 105 shifters.
They also do not have the 3rd hood/top button.
On the other hand, the 105 shifters have two batteries instead of just the one.
Personally, the only upgrade I’d consider is the shifters - I like my satellite shifters and 3rd button too much to give that up
