2020 Goals

  1. Have fun, train right, eat right
  2. Complete two 100 mile gravel events (local Greenville Rambler 100 and Land Run/MidSouth 100)
  3. Win or at least place in the top 3 of our local endurance MTB Winter series in the 6 hour/50+ category (first race in less than 2 weeks!)
  4. Finish ahead of certain individuals in cross (names withheld because why let them know I’m gunning for them  )
  5. Win or at least podium in as many 50+ cross races as I can

Looking a little further, for 2021 my goal is to win my age group in the Spring TMBRA mountain bike cross country series, but that’s a ways out so still a little tentative at this time.

First goal: Fix my “Give a Dang” because it is busted! (Will happen, just fried mentally with the holidays).

Milwaukee is a great place for this. I really wish USAT was smart enough to have the off-road nationals there – incredible trails right there as well. I keep getting emails asking me to go (But I have not done a road tri in 3 years).

Whose arm do I break to get this? Would love that!

My goal, set 2 years ago, was to qualify for Xterra Worlds this year. With the radical changes Xterra implemented, I shifted to qualify for Worlds through USAT nationals. Unfortunately, this puts my A race May 17 – with no races before that to get the rust off.

Knock 1 hour off of my Mohican MTB 100 time (shouldn’t be hard, I had over an hour of time not moving this year, due to cramps).

Learn to hop cx barriers.

Race a crit, or at least show up to a TNW or two.

  • Stay consistent in my training. That means if I can’t get a 90 minute workout in because I had to stay late at work, then at least do a 45 minute -1 set.
  • Participate in at least one of our local crits, despite the fact that I don’t think my fitness is there yet, lose the ego.
  • Weight down to 148lbs, FTP to 225w
  • Be in the mix in our weekly ‘fast’ group ride.

I was going start a ‘2020 Mega Thread!’ but I guess one is enough…

In 2019 I had 3 phases:
i) 3 months of indoor interval training
ii) 4 months of outdoor endurance rides
iii) 5 months of being sick and sidelined

My fitness went from 100 :arrow_down:20 :arrow_up:90 :arrow_down:13.

I felt wholly out of control for most of 2019.

So I’m takin’ it back in 2 :doughnut:2 :doughnut: (otherwise known as ‘:fu:2019’)! Kinda.

I’ve done too much amateur research regarding exercise protocols et al pertaining to my particular cardio condition and have cobbled together a 16-month plan (plus nutrition etc) to keep me busy until the specialist gets back from his winter vacation probably some time in May. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

The training is nothing exciting and highly repetitive but my “A Race” is heart health/rehab; basically competing against my own body. :persevere: I’ll be recording BP, HR, and HRV (and faux FTP).

Good luck to everyone! :+1:

My goal is to race some of the BC Enduro series, and do the EWS100 at the Whistler EWS round in August. My wife will celebrate turning 50 by racing the Cabo 70.3 in November, and I am committed to race it as well.
So I’m training for gravity mountain biking for the first half of the year, then a half-iron for the second half (something Plan Builder is not able to cope with, at least at this stage of its development, btw).

My goals are to complete those events in the top half of my age group, and not break anything.

I love this one. I feel like a sort of black sheep in this forum as I don’t really race in any way, and mental health is a big reason why I ride my bikes. I’d just like to get a little stronger and be dropped on a couple less social rides next year.

I’d like to find a good balance of being at home and being on the bike as I enjoy both for very different reasons. Podiums and upgrades aren’t really on my radar at all, and may never be. I would rather use this awesome tool to get a little stronger as that benefits me off the bike as well.

Here’s to an awesome 2020 for everyone here, regardless of goals! While I am a very different cyclist from most folks here, reading through all of these threads I have never felt unwelcome.

:beers: :v:

This is great, something I would like to do as well. I often get in the mindset of “if I can’t do it all, why even bother?” (not good). I need to remind myself that if I can’t get the full thing in then shortening the ride or even going for a quick jog around the block would be better than nothing!

My main goal is just to ride. After a couple of crazy years that kept me off the bike more than I would like I hope to get back into the groove and get some of the fitness back i had a couple of years ago.

I’ll probably get back to doing some local races and charity rides but my main event now is the Hincapie Gran Fondo in Greenville, SC next October.

In no particular order, off the top of my head:

Training:

  • Achieve and maintain 4W/kg
  • Maintain >400 TSS 6-week average and consistent >6hrs/week on the bike
  • Continue medium volume TR plans throughout the year with no planned extended breaks
  • Recognize injuries when they happen, and reduce training to recover
  • Vastly improve training while traveling, as that takes up 6-10 weeks of each year.

Races:

  • Race as many local road and CX races as possible
  • Podium at least one CX race
  • Get sufficient results in 2 CX races for an upgrade to B category (not interested in an upgrade until I race at least 5+ races this)
  • Don’t get lapped at CX provincials (also entirely depends on who shows up to race)
  • Find one more “fun/large” race event to travel to.
  • (if injury free) Train for and run <1:40 half marathon for Rock and Roll Vegas. This year I fully untrained due to injuries and managed a 1:58.

You might be surprised how many really good athletes, while mentally focused in their sport, are a disaster outside their sport. I often think about a former team mate of mine named Juli Furtado. Many complicated and personnel reasons (I’ve been told) she was/is just a tortured soul.

Point is you are not a black sheep. Probably more the norm. Happy New Year!

  1. FTP above 240
  2. BF % below 10
  3. Significant strength gains in gym
  4. Get back on the TT Bike
  5. Do an Enduro (or two or three)

2019 averaged 10 hours / week training. Like to kick that up to 12 and use the extra time to get that long Z2 ride in each week.
