Amazing!!! Congrats- this is no small feat . It’s great that you have this exciting goal to carry you into next season.
This brings me to your question:
I’d consider your motivation levels when making off-season plans. Your motivation is often an indication of where your body is at physiologically, and therefore a helpful indicator of how much of an off-season you need and what that looks like. One of the main goals of an off-season is to regain motivation to a level that will sustain you throughout the long season ahead.
Regardless, a complete break is beneficial for many reasons so I strongly suggest you take some time completely off of the bike, even if that is just a week or so. As for your approach when getting back on the bike, Jonathan shares some golden advice founded on scientific principles in the podcast clip I’ve linked below. I think his advice will be incredibly helpful for you.
Thank you, this is very helpful and good to know. I have been lifting weights religiously for 20 years, and am used to that feeling of when I need to cut back for a bit.
My wife is being induced with our 2nd child this Friday, and I did an all out effort 3 hr ride Sunday to see where I am at, so this week may actually be a good chance to take a good week off and reset. Then I can get back in a maintainable schedule for the remainder of the year, with a bit of a ramp up leading into my less-important mid-November race. I usually take it a bit easier around Christmas, which will prepare me to hit it hard with a structured plan after the New Year.
, having that background definitely helps with being in tune with your body and what it needs.
Aaah this is exciting! I hope all goes well .
This sounds like an excellent time to shift your focus away from training. Sounds like a really solid plan. And if you feel that you need to adjust those plans, you can always do so. Not that I know from personal experience, but I hear those little ones can be somewhat unpredictable .
All the best for this exciting time! Let us know if any questions pop up further down the line .
