Their post from this morning addressing ‘Rolling coal’ shows either how Incompetent they are or how biased or connected this kid is. Yeah, we’re upset about the rolling coal part…
I’d get the one with the light even if you end up turning the light off because the battery is much bigger and lasts much longer.
I’d get the one with the light. Its suppose to react to drivers in terms of its flashing so hopefully its doing its job and catching the eye of a few.
That too
" Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis, through a Facebook post and interviews with TV reporters, hinted that the teen could face charges ranging from misdemeanor assault to felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Ultimately, grand jurors will decide if charges will be filed, he told ABC13’s Steve Campion. "
I bought a Varia with the light while I also had the Fly6. The Cycliq was so people could hopefully deconstruct my death, Varia was to hopefully help prevent it. The Fly6 died soon later, I will replace it eventually.
I don’t think the Varia is nearly as great as people make it out to be. But it is still a useful tool. I knew it was worth it when I had some guy on an eBike roll by me and ask what kind of light it was because of how far away he could see it. And yes, it does flash faster when a car is approaching.
I think the varia is more useful when alone than when in a group. I’m not sure what action you could take when in a group other than say, “car back.” When alone, you can make decisions about where to position yourself on the road.
I haven’t ridden with a group in over a year. And my positioning doesn’t really change much at all.
The advantage in a group you know something is coming (it could be an attacking cyclist not necessarily a car), so hopefully as you are expecting it you are less likely to wobble than take the pack down.
You quoted the part the makes it legal!
except under any of the following circumstances … [w]hen reasonably necessary to avoid any unsafe condition or potential conflict, including one caused by a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and another vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane
If the lane is not wide enough for both a bicycle and a car to safely be side-by-side, you are not required to ride close to the right-hand side of the lane.
I have had a cop get on his loudspeaker and order my friend and I to the right side of the road when there was literally no space for a car and bike, let alone safely.
And there were two lanes of traffic in the middle of the night, so we weren’t holding up traffic either.
The law exist to represent the social values of a society.
You can dicuss the written law as much as you want but no human should have the right to endanger other human life.
This is just common sense to me…
Just because a cop told you to do something doesn’t mean it’s the law. Cops are sometimes as ignorant of our rights as the general public.
I had a cop “pull me over” and force me to ride on a badly broken and muddy sidewalk. Unfortunately, police officers are just like any other job. Some are good at it and deserve our thanks, and some are not and deserve our criticism, just like in the case of this teen being released without charge.
Well aware. But they are the ones enforcing it. And you better be damned good at proving your point in court before a judge will back you.
I carry a “Colorado Cyclists’ Bill of Rights” in my hydration pack, in the pocket where my ID, insurance card, and emergency $20 snack money is. I got it as part of a race packet and I think it’s great. It was provided by a law firm that specializes in bike cases.
Like the pepper spray that I also carry, hope to never have to use either.
That doesn’t make it law.
That’s how I learned this – got a ticket for refusing to ride on the right on a narrow road. Got it thrown out by the ADA and judge because it was wrong.
That was part of the point of linking that document provided by a local NC lawyer who specializes in bike law. We have had stories of folks having cops pull them over for similar and those folks have been able to successfully educate the cops enough for them to let them go.
And this is obviously done in a similar fashion by police “auditors” that you see holding the police accountable for not overstepping the law.
You have the time and knowledge to do this.
Other people dont.
Some cops do this ALL the time. They pull laws and regulations out of thin air.
On most cases people just pay. So its a win win for them.
you are correct that fighting a ticket would be a hassle. Just my opinion, but I’m going to make the safest choice for me. I’m not going to make a less safe choice because I fear that a cop doesn’t understand the law.
