Does anyone have experience with the shokbox? And do others have experience with a Buxumbox? I have an aerus biospeed bag. Despite the observations in earlier posts, that baggage handlers may treat these bags more gently, I have had two separate instance of frame damage when flying to europe…so moving to a hard case. Perhaps it was because the Aerus looks less like a bike bag than the EVOC or Scicon soft cases.
Ive only ever travelled to Europe with either a Scion hard box or Bike Box Alan. The reviews say the Buxumbox or Shokbox are a bit heavier than most, the tracker in the latter looks neat (although I hope you’d never need it).
Have you been pleased with the Scicon (Aerotech X TSA?). Baggage Handler Proof??
When I borrowed it I had no damage to the bike which to me was the main thing. The one I’ve travelled with most is the BBA it been fine too. After seeing a mates bagged bike in Mallorca I’d always travel with a hard case.
I traveled over the Atlantic once again with my bike in the Lifeline EVA bikepod. It has always kept my bike intact and scratch free and I count to seven trips including 3 flights every time. It has served me and my bikes well but it can’t stand upright by itself anymore. I wanted to bring an extra wheelsets with me but the wheels got squeezed to tight together for my taste. I am thinking about the Biknd Helium V4 which can carry two sets of wheels. Someone who owns this one or have any other suggestions for a bike pod that can fit two wheelsets?
I got this bag but haven’t used it yet. My biggest concern is that you can’t fully open the bag unless you pull out few of the stabilizer bars (just a couple of inches) with the pull tabs. The TSA won’t know about it so I’m concerned that they will force open the bag and damage the bag. Thought about taping some instructional graphics on the bag showing how you have to partially pull some of the bars to open the bag. But sliding the bars back in is going to be a chore with the tight fit so I suspect that TSA won’t slide the bars back in.
Am I overthinking it? Has anybody traveled with this bag?
I don’t own this model, so just commenting based on the pictures in the article…he shows it packed with little straps sticking out of the velcro. I guess the designers were assuming the agents would see that and pull it out. Not a great assumption…I would be worried about it too. I could also see them just pulling them completely out and then sticking them inside the bag rather than messing with proper reassembly. I like your “include instructions” idea.
Didn’t read all the comments so sorry if this has been posted.
I use an EVOC “semi-soft” case and have had no issues. I pack it as if someone that doesn’t care one bit will be handling the bike. Anything that can break is padded or removed. Take offer the RD and hanger, pull the rotors, mostly deflate the tires.
After one travel with the case, my initial thought is that the inability for TSA to fully open the bag may not be a big problem. My guess is that TSA can pry the bag open enough for them to see what’s inside and grab any loose bags in the bag for closer inspection (ziploc bags with tools, gels, shoes, etc.). I’m pretty sure that the TSA did not pull the stabilizer bars, fully open the case, and then slide the bars back in. But as mentioned by others, the bag is big, so if you are traveling with a family, there’s a good chance that you’ll need a second Uber/taxi. Perhaps with the Scion, you can get by with one large SUV. I do love how I don’t have to loosen the stem to remove or tilt down the handlebars - no need to pack a torque wrench.
