Anyone else having Issues with Wahoo Element/Bolt?

Hey @sryke, I’m not aware of that bug so we most likely don’t have it fixed in beta. I would load that fit file in a different application to verify that the bug is on your head-unit and if that is the case please contact our customer support so they can get logs from your device and track your issue?

I’ve not had loads of reasons to contact Wahoo support - because my products have never broken, but when I have contacted them I’ve been very impressed. I hadn’t even bought my bolt and the sent me an unreleased adaptor (for free) so I could use a Wahoo adaptor on my Canyon mount. That alone was enough to convince me to move from Garmin.
I’m in the UK so possibly different support center to you.

I emailed the Beta email account and for setup with the Beta fix. It’s in the process of downloading and then I’m going for a short ride. I’ll report back after my ride.

Thanks for doing this :+1:t2:

I’ve had a lot of issues with their stuff as well, but their customer service has been pretty good for me.

I’ve had to replace 3 HR straps, because they either stopped reporting or were reading incorrectly (these were within a few months of each other, so they weren’t just worn out), have now had 2 Bolts replaced as well. Both times on the computers the power button and on the first the toggle buttons had become unglued from the unit, without any sort of abuse or misuse.

This has been frustrating to say the least, but every time I’ve contacted Wahoo, they’ve been happy to replace the units for me. It’s hard for me to say I dislike the product, because I find them fairly well designed and easy to use, especially compared to others on the market, but it’s really hard to look back on my experiences and say that I recommend the products.

Back from my ride. I’m happy to report that everything thing sees to be fixed. Btw, the beta firmware is WB-15-6922 if anyone is interested.

I did an easy 1 hour loop that I’ve done dozens, if not well over a hundred, times. The results from today’s ride was 14.86 miles and 372 KJ’s. As you’ll see from below, this is consistent with what I generally get for this ride. Plus, I ran my Apple Watch using the native workout app as a back up and it also came back with 14.86 miles.

This loop always reports back at 14.85 mile +/- about 0/02 depending on how many corners I do or don’t cut. I’ve never really given too much attention to the KJ’s for a ride but I went back and looked at several over the last month or so for reference purposes and they are all between 370-380 KJ’s.

Thanks to Wahoo for the quick fix to this software glitch.

This is kind of where I stand. My (second) Tickr has been a champ, and I largely like the Bolt and my (second) Kickr Core. I thought Wahoo’s corporate handling of the 2018 Kickr issues was poor, and I didn’t appreciate them putting the burden of replacement back on the customer nor was my personal interaction with them satisfying. It very much seemed like I was putting them out by making my claims with both the Kickr and Tickr. I still have the box my second Core came in just in case, but it’s worked well for a year now so maybe I can finally get rid of that with some confidence.

So “disaster” is probably a strong word, but “unimpressed” is accurate, as is my stance that they no longer get my business nor my recommendation. To each, their own… I’m glad others are pleased with their experiences.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread…

I’ll say that I’m glad to see someone from Wahoo engaging in this thread. That’s a good step!

I didn’t have this particular issue but within a week of puchasing my Bolt on Black Friday 2019 the TSS and IF stopped showing up. Contacted cust. srvc and they said it was a known issue and that they were working on it. I gave them the opportunity to send me a new one and I would return the bad one so at least I wouldn’t be without a computer for several days( CC was on file). They refused so I sent it back for a full refund and bought a Garmin Edge 830. It completely died after 5 weeks so I returned it and am on my second one(830) hoping the first one was a lemon. They all have issues but to be honest I would rather have one die than a company send me a unit with “known issues” and no timeline to fix. I do have a Kikr Core that to date has been flawless but it’s only 3 months old. Time will tell.

Garmin allowed me to do exactly this with Vector3 pedals that were 18 months old. I ended up with zero missed days of power based training and a brand new set of pedals to replace the others that had an issue that was known to affect some of their pedals.

THAT is how you do it.

Garmin’s has historically bad customer service.

@tomski86 not picking on you, but my biggest issue with Wahoo Elemnt/Bolt is when people say stuff like that  Yesterday was out on the road and met a guy, we rode together for about 15 minutes. After a couple of double beeps and me calling out “car back” he asked if I liked my Garmin radar and headunit. We talked a bit and joked that apparently we must be the only people in the world not having problems with our 530 and 830 headunits :joy: How is it possible to have over 1000 rides recorded on a Garmin and not have a real issue? :man_shrugging: In the past year or so no less than 5 people I follow on Strava were honest enough to report a problem with their Bolt in the title of the ride on Strava… and absolute silence in the comments. But put a Garmin problem into the title of a Strava ride and the pitchforks come out and calls to ‘get a Bolt’ and ‘get rid of that junk.’ :man_shrugging: Good times :upside_down_face:

I have had fewer issues with Garmin products personally, and better experience with their customer service personally. Both companies will exist without our respective business, so let’s stick with our personal preferences for our own use and our own word, agreed?

@bbarrera no worries mate, didn’t get offended or anything

I can understand where you are coming from as it is my exact view but the other way around. Where I live you can’t get by a single day without someone on the local forums or message boards trying to get help resolve an issue with a garmin unit. GPS going crazy, units freezing up, paring issues etc. The worst thing is that people come to the forums for help as the customer service is just worthless. With wahoos, you don’t get that, or at least I can’t remember when I saw (or if I saw) someone with a problem.

Did a ride on my Element yesterday, did the update, not a single glitch.

I’m beginning to wonder if this discrepancy has something to do with actual location and differences in distribution batches. I have first-hand experience with phones and phone components and in the EU you could get two different qualities of the same phone (same make, brand, unit etc.). The one with the lower quality would break easier, have more glitches and so on. There are laws being put in place in the EU to prevent this sort of things now, all units (be it phones, TV’s, whatever) have to be of the same quality in all member states, by law.

So for me it is not that far-fetched to think that in regions where statistically you can see a larger negative x brand response (due to various reasons) are actually regions with tangible lower unit build qualities.
