Cheers mate, that’ll be it. I had it all set different for previous workouts not pushed from TR.
In the market for my first cycle computer. Which one makes trainerroad outdoor workouts the easiest to perform? I’m currently looking at the Garmin Edge 530 or Wahoo Elemnt Roam.
I could just do it on my phone, but I would prefer to use a cycle computer when riding.
I can’t speak for the 530 but the Roam works well for me.
both work fine. I’m using Edge 530. Have a friend using Roam.
I recently bought a 530 and after the initial set up it has been super easy to use. It took a little learning to find the best way to navigate the unit and set up the screen but since it has been great. I can’t speak for the Wahoo stuff though.
What’s an outdoor ride?
I feel like we need a “back in my day…” meme of outside “real” riding vs inside" fake" riding
That was the impression I had before I got my Garmin 830. The Garmin has a handful of features that I ‘sort of’ cared about that the wahoo didn’t, so I went with it.
Bad choice…the Garmin is impossible to use, setup, or navigate the menu system. I’ll probably get used to it at some point…but by the. It will be years down the line and something better will be on the market lol.
Anyone used Garmin edge 130? I have a Garmin edge 500 (yes I’m that old! Lol) but recently started using outdoor workouts and to be honest it’s not great on edge 500.
Want to stick to Garmin but torn between 130 and 530. I know 130 only has breadcrumb navigation (which I’m used to with edge 500) and 530 has better map navigation…but to be honest not that fussed…all I’m interested in is the outdoor TR workout experience? Is 530 better than 130 for this? Anyone use 130 for workouts?
Workouts are not supported on 130.
Right, the Edge 130 Plus is compatible
That being said, I have some issues with mine not displaying correctly some workouts, so I would not recommend
Perfect, thank you. Looks like 530 is way to go then. Cheers
Never understood how trainerroad training in the outdoors, in the outdoors there are climbs and flat roads, and even traffic lights
For example, I am climbing a hill, my riding power must be very high, but at this time the course requires me to ride in zone 2, how to solve this problem?
You have to figure out the course that best fits your workout. That might mean a long warmup before starting, pausing the workout, etc.
My example of one is that I have to ride 10-15 mins to get to an area without stop signs or lights, and then I might have to do a few u-turns along the route to time the next light properly to avoid hitting a long red light in the middle of a set or a climb during a rest interval. I have a few different length routes mapped out and then improvise the u-turns as needed. I also end up with an extended cool down as I repeat the section from the start.
Choose a course that fits your workout (or vice versa). I personally love outdoor workouts when going alone for a quick spin. Good motivation and less monotonous.
So I need to think ahead about specific courses based on outdoor riding routes and just keep certain tss and if data?
Keep all the data. You rode it, you earned it!
You don’t have to be too specific.
For long (>10min) intervals I choose a route / area with no junctions to interupt the effort
For short (<3min) intervals I may choose a local hill (or hills) and just repeat.
For Z2 I just use gears and don’t stress too much if I’m slightly over the target
100% need to plan route before hand (maybe not for longer endurance stuff - just ride easy/steady). If V02 intervals (2-4 ish mins) I have a local hill I use. I find longer threshold stuff more challenging as finding a 15-20 min stretch without traffic lights or significant up/downs somewhere is near impossible. If flatter terrain (or long steady hills) then easier.
Basically this means for me, threshold and sweetspot is indoors only, vow is hill repeats and endurance is outdoors.
I have an 830 and have had no issues with the outdoor workouts. The 530 is basically the same but with buttons instead of a touchscreen.
