I was in a similar situation and picked up a Cervelo Soloist about a month ago. One major plus is that there are no proprietary cockpit components and it is easy to service. I’m very happy with my decision, the only downside is there aren’t many color choices.
Could fork out for a custom paint job if money isn’t an issue. Though I love the look of the Gold Dust Soloist and hoping to get my hands on one in the next few months
Would that detract from the purity?
Save $$$ buy aluminum frame and build it with lightweight, comfortable components. Rotational weight is the main concern so get light wheels with good light tires(28-31). Then Cranksets, nothing lower than Ultegra. Pedals — don’t go cheap or utilitarian here. Buy Ultegra or Look or Speedplay and Sidi (commensurate) shoes. Di2 or AXS. Carbon bar and seatpost might dampen the road vib from frame.
This really isn’t good advice. If you want to win a road race… You need fast components. and for the most part, aero will outweigh weight in most race scenarios, except steep uphill segments.
Buy a fast frame that fits you.
fast wheels. Minimum 40mm depth. GP5K S TR/Corsa Pro
Groupset doesn’t matter as long as it works. 105 Di2/Ultegra fine.
Big chainrings.
Narrow bars, aero shape if you can.
Waxed chain
Wear a good skinsuit. Aero Socks. Aero lid unless heat will impact you.
not sure what the Sidi comment is for. wear shoes that fit your feet.
I agree, what a weird post. Seems like a bot account to me, joined 22h ago, read 4min, 1 post with a specific brand name and resurrcts a dead thread from years ago. … sus
Well it’s not a thread from years ago, I made it this year. And I haven’t bought the bike yet, but will this summer and when I do I’m not going to worry about rotational weight or speedplay ha. And I appreciate all the feedback in here! price/value I still might end up with an aeroroad slx, just seems hard to beat for the high end.
Van Rysel seem to be having some success in the pro peloton recently
I don’t buy new bikes, so I am not the target market, but I’ve had a close look at a couple of their bikes in the local Decathlon shop and they look ok to me
Taking the RCR Pro with Ultegra Di2 at GBP5,500, I think it can hold its own against similarly priced bikes from more mainstream brands.
In the used market, I am not yet sure how much depreciation there will be on them. I don’t expect they will hold their value as well as some of the premium brands, but it is too early to say for sure.
Where do you look for your bikes? I’m always interested in used, but never know where to look for bikes
I’ve bought and sold through both Facebook and eBay. Think it depends how comfortable you are assessing a bike’s condition (and the integrity/knowledge of the person selling it), negotiating, etc. There are secondhand retailers like Pro’s Closet in US or Cycle Exchange in UK if you want the peace of mind of knowing your bike has been properly inspected and you have a warranty in case of problems, but you’re obviously paying a premium for that.
ebay mostly
It requires patience and you have more options if you buy components separately and build a bike yourself.
But value is out there to be had (imo).
Scoure the second hand market. Ebay, Facebook, Buycycle, Cycleexchange.
Could always wait til end of the season and try pick up an ex pro bike.
