Canada Forest Fires and Air Quality

Laguardia has a full ground stop in effect right now. No idea when it might be lifted.

LGA is a rather diva of airports, but the videos of the haze look apocalyptic!! Yikes…

All that ash particulate matter can’t be good for jet engines too.

so if the air quality is say moderate, is it less bad to go for a zone 2 ride compared to intervals?

Or should the decision be binary - ride outside / don’t ride outside?

Personally, yes. If you can smell it, the particulate matter is there. Elevated breathing is drawing that in and also deeper. But that also assumes that the indoor trainer location has better air. This is very disturbing that the air quality has gotten so bad at such a massive level. Wow…

Yes, sorry i should clarify, no intention of training indoors, just not that hardcore haha.
But after a rest day yesterday, today i’m itching to do my training.
The index is 70 which is not bad i guess, but normally the air is pristine.

I’m thinking 70 isnt that bad based on the various agency recommendations, especially as this is all going to literally blow over in a few days.

I hope!

300-400 in DC this morning. I’m on recovery week and decided to sleep in after getting to bed way too late. Right answer by accident is still the right answer, I guess.

So far, the reporting has been rather sketchy. One day last week, the prognostication was for ‘clear air’, and yet at nightfall the moon was an angry smokey ruddy red ball, and Venus was almost completely obscured. Yeah, sure, ‘clear air’. COUGH COUGH Air you can wear?

We get this every summer in Reno…usually anything over 150 and everyone stays indoors…our local race series cancel if aqi is over 150 as well.

This is key. Most normal air filters aren’t going to filter out PMI 2.5. During previous years with really bad fire seasons I had to change out the filters and run an additional air purifier in my basement to get levels down to a level I wanted to train hard in. @Jonathan has discussed on the podcast before that there are times in Reno when there are no amounts of air purifiers you can use to get the levels down enough indoors.

Separately, sports specific air quality masks with replaceable filters are a thing that exists. They are intended primarily for commuters who live in polluted cities. I have one but have never used it for a hard workout during fire season. Unsurprisingly, it’s hot on your face.

I did try riding with an N95, and decided that using a scuba talk and regulator would be easier. Now, with the smoke issues, I wouldn’t know what to do except don’t.

Nevada ‘air’. I was in Las Vegas decades ago, and was amazed at the air quality, and then hit Vegas around the trump debate there and was horrified at the smog. I still rented a MTB and hit Red Rocks because it was better than the strip and the hotel, and the air was better there but it was still a marked difference from ‘back home’. I thought how sad it is that people are accepting that. Was that saying about the frog and hot water? No kidding… The public’s laziness, and political cowardice, and the realization that it’s inevitable, and the horror of realizing that the planet might become to toxic to support life in large areas in my lifetime. Sobering to say the least.

Are there any air purifiers available any more? And the prices! Yow!! I just keep having flashbacks to the coverage leading up to the China Olympics and wondering how many athletes would drop out, or be sick because of the stifling air pollution.

It was unbelievable that they rode in that. I’ll never forget those pictures.

GF was freaking out last night since we live in a drafty 1850s house without central air/filter, asking if we should put the window units in to “filter”, I chuckled. Luckily she had already planned to head to her moms this weekend with the baby which is more north but west and right now much lower AQI.

We are at about 150 now and my drive in at 7:45 was “fine” but just took a car for a test drive and there is definitely now (9:15) visible ground level “fog”. So much for going for a ride with my dad this weekend while he’s visiting, at least AQI is about half here compare to their house and a trainer ride is probably safe for him to do here, he’s got a half IM in a few weeks.

Here in Ohio, we’ve been sitting at 130-150+ AQI. Have been training and racing in this and have had a noticeable uptick in allergies and nagging congestion/resultant cough. Smoke has been noticeable, including not being able to see the city proper (I live just outside of Columbus, Ohio.)

I’m really hoping it clears for the racing this weekend.
