I simply don’t see it as if we’re some kind of guests who need to take our shoes off, bow, and ask for permission to speak our minds. I didn’t find anything disrespectful in speculations, they are what they are - NOT CLAIMS.
Sure. we’re not at some dinner party or whatever, but the mods here give us a pretty long leash. Still, if enough people ignore/break the forum guidelines often enough, this fine resource for training tips and other bike-related chat might be shut down. I’d hate for that to happen.
I actually agree that the post in question was mostly fine! It was one of the saner takes on what might have happened. Had it and the replies come in before Chad asked us all to but the breaks on speculation, I think it would have been a fine contribution. But it didn’t.
“Chad asked us all”
Let me reply half-jokingly with another Godfather reference: ‘Can’t do it, Sally’…
For the time being, no deep dives - just shallow wades full of bro science and life experiences from the homies!
Why is it so unpopular these days to show restraint out of respect for other people? There’s real people out there behind this very blindingly white and red screen (Hey, can we get dark mode?). And I’m not taking any sides, just trying to imagine we’re all having a beer together. After a really fun bike ride.
It is available….I have mine set on it now.
Doh! Sweet! I haven’t checked for it in a while.
Is this a TR native feature or a third party browser extension like Dark Reader??
Well…respect for fellow man is a bit of a lost thing these days in this country. I dont mind talking about this subject, and feel it’s fair game honestly. But throwing out random horrible things as possibilities that someone might have done is crossing a line IMO.
I made a comment way up above to that effect…but, once a train like this has gotten up to steam there’s no stopping it.
I’ll add my voice to those who feel that we should all show – and expect from others – a reasonable amount of respect for other people and their views, especially when they disagree with us and ours.
That should apply even more strongly in this case, since we’re having this conversation on a forum paid for, supported, and moderated by TrainerRoad, the company. We are “in their house” or “on their land” if you will. I believe that does matter for two reasons:
-
One, simply out of good manners… and that ought to be more than enough of a reason on its own!
-
But two, also out of self-interest because, over time, we want to be good guests in many ways, or we may find that the goodwill erodes and TrainerRoad decides it’s in their best interest to shut down the forum.
Beyond “this is TR’s forum”, there is a third reason that would apply here and on any other Internet forum, like Reddet et al. To wit: the kind of speculation which you’d be entirely and fully entitled to indulge while chatting with friends in your living room may be defamatory, rude, uncouth, or downright asinine when you engage in it in a public forum such as this, where a record of your comments is held for a long time and when many thousands of people have access to your statements. Many things should not be said in public that you might be perfectly within reason to say in private.
I’ve tried hard to refrain from commenting, but, considering the wording in the announcement, I find it very odd that everyone jumped in and said, “oh, I’m sure it was nothing, Chad is awesome and Nate is just mean” and that was considered just fine, but then someone says, “hey, wait a minute, listen to Nate’s wording, maybe something really bad was done” and everyone attacks that person. I was personally more offended by the people trying to play it down than by the person saying, “let’s be realistic here”.
Agreed. I mean lets be honest. Anything is on the table. One side is grossly in the wrong, the other side, both sides, or no sides.
I’d like to say it’s none of our business, but hey - the guy on my car radio told me the news, so now there’s something to talk about.
I just prefer to give everybody a little bit of grace - Trainerroad podcast hosts, present and former, people commenting or speculating - one can speculate to try to make sense of things without malice - and also towards those urging us to be polite around here.
This is the greatest discovery in the history of this forum
for those that missed it the first time around:
come over to the dark side bwah ha ha ha
Thank you! This has been the most helpful post in this thread. I normally use Dark Mode extension on FireFox, but some of the colors get wonky when I switch tabs.
Yeh, I totally agree. I’m really sad to see Chad go too. The TR brand has been damaged (hopefully not permanently). I personally joined TR because Chad (as the head coach) showed a sound knowledge of the science behind training and demonstrated that he had the intellect and ability to review and interpret scientific literature and then apply it to the training plans. Moving forward, I would suggest that this is an opportunity for the brand to further strengthen its science-based training credentials by recruiting a true academic that also has demonstrated experience implementing plans.
Agreed. This has changed my life.
