FYI - Strava premium gives you access to the app FATMAP, which is absolutely fantastic for route planning. It’s basically a phone version of Google earth but with access to much more to trails, routes, etc. I use it frequently for backcountry skiing.
What’s the best deal currently going for a D1 2x Red group? Bikecloset? Hoping for another price drop on the 15th but Bikecloset price actually went UP last week.
I sent a text to them this evening, will see what they say. I was hoping for closer to 1K for the kit, but it went from $1299 to $1499. BTD had a daily deal at like $1200ish a couple days ago, but that sold out pretty quick.
If I want to build a new road bike NEXT summer, would it be a better idea to try to buy a Red groupset with one of these sales, before the new one comes out, to get the best possible price? Or would you generally advise waiting until Black Friday or something and getting the new groupset, even if I end up paying a little more?
This will only be my third bike and I’ve only been cycling a few years, so I don’t know how big the generational improvements generally are when they come out with all-new stuff like this new groupset. And I definitely want 12-speed 2x road SRAM AXS, either Red or Force (and how big is THAT difference?).
I’m a “bang for the buck” guy. I can afford Red. But if the quality/functionality difference is a lot smaller than the price difference and Force is a much better value, I’ll happily buy Force. I care about results, not looks or fancy. I drive a BMW, not a Ferrari. I’m also a recreational cyclist, so I don’t need anything in particular, though I’m happy if better equipment helps me be faster and/or more comfortable.
I just literally am not clear on how big a difference there is between product lines (though I can research that pretty easily) or how big the generational changes are when they introduce new versions (which I’m not sure how to research effectively).
I’m very much like you. From what I understand, the new Force is clearly better unless you are focusing on weight. Then Red. But much of the weight advantage that Red has is in the crankset which you can just buy separately.
I’m not a SRAM user myself or I’d go more into the details but I was wondering similar things and read up.
Edit: Sorry, this might be taking the thread off topic. Hoping for some more Red deals!
To be honest, all of the new AXS stuff is solid. My gravel bike is a mishmash of rival, force and Red. Rival shifters, force crankset, red XPLR derailleur and chain. It’s mismatched because I was trying to hit a budget on the build and I pieced it together using sales as they presented. I got it for a shockingly low price and I was able build a pretty light (8.5kg) bike for very little money all things considered. All of the AXS stuff works well together.
My desire for a full Red kit is for my road bike. An SLR Project one so I want the lightest kit I can afford.
All that to say, for functionality Force/Red is pretty interchangeable. Weight is the main differentiating factor. Rival has a couple other things that differentiate it. The mech doesn’t get the hydraulic clutch and there’s no ports for blips on the shifters.
No one really knows what to expect with D2 Red. We can look to D1 vs D2 Rival and Force for a hint at new hood shape and a refreshed look. Other than that, we’ll have to wait and see.
2021 I had the older gen1 Force AXS. It was fine except the cassette was noisy. They made some changes to that, still gen1, and much better. I had issues with that bike and returned it. Bought a Tarmac with Rival and perfectly fine. Replaced the crank with Red to drop some weight and get the Quarq power meter. Have a 10-36 Force cassette and it’s perfectly fine. No noise, no drama, crisp shifting, yada yada
