That was the scenario that @JSTootell mentioned, wasnā€™t it? In any case, letā€™s keep the discussion focussed on Derek. I think we can all agree that some people are on the road who shouldnā€™t be. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

chpauburn California Highway Patrol Arrests Felony Hit-and-Run Suspect in Connection with January 30,

2024 Crash.

On February 22, 2024, the California Highway Patrol

(CHP) made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a major injury hit-and-run incident that occurred on January 30, 2024. The suspect, identified as Abraham Aguirre-Escobar, was taken into custody for felony Hit and Run charges related to the tragic crash.

On January 30, 2024, a devastating crash occurred on southbound Crosby Herald Road at Wise Road within Placer County. The crash involved a vehicle which struck a bicyclist in the eastbound lane of Wise Road.

As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was ejected from his bike and landed on the roadway. The bicyclist sustained major life threatening injuries and was transported from the scene for treatment. The suspect vehicle that struck the bicyclist failed to stop and render aid to the severely injured bicyclist and instead fled the scene immediately.

The CHP diligently pursued leads and gathered evidence over the past weeks, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect.

The CHP commends the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, Valley Division Investigate Services, witnesses, and the community in bringing justice to the victim and his family. The arrest of Aguirre-Escobar serves as a reminder that hit-and-run incidents will not go unpunished. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court to face the felony Hit and Run charge. The CHP urges anyone with additional information related to this case to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.

Our thoughts remain with the Teel family during this trying time. The CHP remains committed to ensuring the safety of our roadways and holding accountable those who violate the law.

Derek sent email out that heā€™s coming back to work. Heā€™s been through a lot. Congrats to him on his progress thus far and best wishes for continued wellness.

He said he recorded a King of the Road (Ted King) podcast about the whole experience and it will be going live this month.

I havenā€™t had a chance to listen to it yet, but looks like the podcast is out.

I started this yesterday and it is very emotional listening to him. Made me teary eyed. He discusses the whole ordeal in detail. Itā€™s very much worth listening to his story, but it is traumatic listening to how a person can strike another human and then drive off. He shares how his faith and family have sustained him. Very impressive individual.

I just listened today. Huge kudos to him for sharing his story. Definitely a hard listen. I loved hearing him say he was going to use his recovery story someday to motivate slackers.

His description of his injuries was rough. (Iā€™m not squeamish, but I wouldnā€™t listen to the episode while eating.) It is a miracle that he is able to make even something close to a full recovery.

The only thing I wanted to hear more about is whether there are any updates regarding the jerk who hit him. But perhaps he canā€™t talk about it for legal reasons.

Agree. His fitness level and youth certainly help with his recovery. Even if he has a close to full recovery, with injuries like this I always wonder what it will feel like 30 years from now. I know as Iā€™ve gotten older, I now feel even fairly minor injuries from my youth.

I have a few cycling injuries as well, although nothing that comes close to this (e. g. 2 x shoulder, right knee) and e. g. I have limited range of motion with my left arm compared to my right.

I would expect that Derek will ā€œfeelā€ his injuries after the fact in some way, perhaps later in life.

That was indeed a heavy listen :face_exhaling:, especially as a new dad. I assumed the hit had been more of a scenario of running over from behind. Itā€™s interesting it was more of a T-bone. Just wild and sad. Amazing, cheering for Derek.
Not to go too far off topic, but as a Christian, I appreciate and encourage Derek in not being shy to give glory to God with his platform.
