Di2 Upgrade - Anyone ever done this?

Hey, I have a Propel Disc and thinking of upgrading it with Di2. I’m not sure what juncion box, cables, or battery i should get. Is there a guide or sometging I can use?

Hi Martin,

you are going to need the DI2 transmission kit with the correct brifters for your hydraulic disc brakes.

Its easiest to buy a kit as you get all the bits you need.

You will need one junction A located at the bars and one junction B that you place near the bottom bracket inside the tube. For a super clean install you can put in the bar end junction A and use the ant+/bt module at the stem to act as your connection between the bars and the rest of the bike. Note this approach depends on exactly how many shifters you want to put on your bars. You have to use the climb box with two buttons instead of two separate climb shift buttons to make this work. Sprint shifters are separate again but have dedicated ports on the brifters that you cant use for anything else.

The battery goes into the seat post - giant sell a part specifically for this so your dealer can get it for you or if you have access to a 3D printer you are welcome to copy the part I made.

etap?

To be completely honest, if you still cannot figure out this stuff from this thread I think you might want to let the shop do it for you. Also part availability is basically a shit show right now so good luck getting parts, especially 8070/9170 shifters; hydro di2 is stupid right now, shifters in particular.

Upgrading Di2 is not hard, but its not easy… there is no guide to doing it other than the dealer manual. You need to know all the parts for the build. However, if you do it yourself you can save a ton.

I upgraded my fun bike to Di2 hydro from hydro mech. All in all, once it was all said and one, i basically paid $300 USD for the upgrade once i sold the old partial groupo, and i actually made money once I was finished because i got money back from some benefits through work. I paid something like 1200 USD converted for the entire groupo minus crank and calipers and rotors, whereas the groupos run something like 2000+ from ebay

Note that I hear 12 speed is coming out, so you can delay the purchase to maybe get your hands on 12 speed, or get 11 speed cheaper… although it may be the same as right now, with a huge demand and no supply issue. And I can guarantee you Shimano is NOT going to make 12 speed cheaper lmfao

I’m thinking about Di2 upgrade for Trek Domane SL 105. Two question:

  • my research indicates that I can reuse existing 105 components like brakes and crankset. Is it a good idea?
  • will I need new cable grommets for Di2 cables?

R7000? In that case yes, no problem. Up to you whether you’ll be bothered by the aesthetics.

Grommets - you can get these from Trek or a dealer. I have a 2018 SLR6 and I’m also looking to upgrade although finding parts in stock is difficult. Rarer than rocking horse poo.

Bring this post back up. I have a grail that I want to convert to di2. Can you advise how you did this and where did you place the battery if using the vlcs seat post.

Thanks

Sure,

I ended up ordering the ‘battery holder’ part from canyon that is installed in the down tube. You make all your connections and then slide it into the holder and tighten the screws from the outside to lock it down.

it’s part #17 in this diagram.

The only real annoying thing in the install are:

a) there’s absolutely no way to do internal routing on the handlebars. There’s some sort of barrier in the middle of the bars that there is no way to get around.

b) The handlebar junction A spacers that Canyon uses on their Di2 Grails is proprietary, and are not available for purchase. (parts 21 + 22 in the diagram). So i kinda had to cludge it to fit firmly with electrical name and doing a little dremel work on the spacers that come with the junction A unit.

c) Also the cable grommets (parts 14) are a smaller diameter for the di2 wires than the shifter cables, so you might want to order those so they aren’t sliding in and out of your frame. You could probably hack something there as well.

Other than that, it went as expected and everything worked as I wanted.

Hi @SexyCoolguy I also have Canyon Grail 7 2021 - could you provide me with some kind of manual which parts did you use to mount di2 and cable lenghts? where did you install the battery for the system? If you would be so kind to provide some photos - that would be very helpful

Not a specific answer to your question but this website is a great source for Di2 info and how to instructions. A great tool for anyone messing around with Di2. Https://bettershifting.com/

Well, there’s no manual. Di2 is pretty straight-forward as everything just needs to be attached together and it all works, it’s difficult to mess up.

Looking at everything i got:

From Canyon:
1x blind plug: 104729
1x Di2 grommet for rear derailleur: 100395
1x Di2 grommet for frame: 154653
1x battery carriage: 1003960
2x battery carriage screws: 100397

I used their battery carriage that you install in the down-tube, you need to remove your bottom bracket to get to it, but you’d need to do that anyway to run the cable for your rear derailleur.

Alternatively if you’re using a hollow seat-post, you could try that, but I ended up using the “leaf” seatpost from canyon, so that doesn’t work.

These were the parts i bought for the GRX-Di2 setup. But essentially, you need the Junction-A, Junction-B, Wireless transmitter(optional for bluetooth access), Di2 components, battery, and the wires to attach it all.

This was my bit honking order list when i did the build. I don’t know if all of my di2 lengths were perfect, but i made it work. I recommend measuring, and doing a mock-build on the outside using string. When it doubt, order longer than you think (within reason). In most cases, you can just stuff the excess in the frame.

Qty: 1 Shimano Di2 EW-SD50 E-Tube Wire 350mm

I don’t have any photos of the process. Plenty of stuff online i’m sure.

I recommend getting everything you need and then just hook it all together off the bike and test it all out. Then you can get an idea of how everything works before you start fishing cables through your frame. This will also help you determine if you might have a bad component or bad cable before your bike is in pieces.

@SexyCoolguy big thanks for great manual.
Maybe I didn’t do it at the beginning, but from what I understood after reading the description - you did upgrade Grail but in carbon version, right? I am trying to cope with adding di2 to the AL version. I do not know if it is possible and it is possible (whether the battery fits in the seatpost, whether it is actually possible to run the wires inside the frame) and what exactly to buy accessories from the side of the canon to buy holders, etc. Any ideas guys?

yeah, i did it in the carbon version of the frame. Entirely different frames, and since there isn’t explicitly a Di2 version of the aluminum version you would probably need to do more of standard retro-fit. I imagine you’d still be able to internally route the cables and things like the Di2 grommets might but standard sizes across the different canyon frames. So the only thing you’d need to figure out is where you want the battery.

Or just wait for the wireless Di2 to trickle down to GRX
