little egypt road…from west to east, I believe. It’s a super nice ride.
I here ya there!
This past week I put the Selcof full carbon aero drop bars and aerobar extensions on my bike. I switched out the cassette from 11-28 to 11-32. I put skateboard tape on the inside of my waterbottle holders. I put skateboard tape on the grips of my aerobar extensions. After polling local riders I decided to put a 44mm tire on the front with a more aggressive tread…same tire on the back but 40mm.
I set them up tubeless which has me very nervous. First DK I’m doing tubeless. Never had a DK flat before so I’m tempting fate maybe for no good reason.
Saturday I did a 113 mile ‘Dial It’ ride to double check all the little things, dial my nutrition, check hydration, batteries, electronics, etc. That ride WENT GREAT.
I don’t have an extra derailleur hanger and can’t get one which has me worried sick. I put a simple little chain tensioner in my bag in case I have to go single speed.
If you want to look me up before the race we can network. At least that way if you need a tube or bottom bracket or tire or CO2 my crew might be able to give you a backup. One of my primary race goals is to make sure my crew have a good, stress-free time so I don’t want to pile too much on them but if you need some peace of mind maybe we can help you out!
Good luck user @Brennus.
How are you finding those Selcof bars? I see they’ve come down to £64 on Planet-X, which almost seems too good to be true…
I put on a new chain and rear cassette. Running 1x40 and 11/42 in the rear. I ordered s hanger but it hasn’t come yet! I won’t get it now because I’m leaving on Tuesday before the mail comes. Ugh.
I also put on Terevail Cannoballs 38. A little nervous was they aren’t 40+ but I’ll see.
I’ve run tubeless on both gravel and road for a few years. I love it. Hope I’m not cursing myself.
I’ll message you my mobile number and lets connect on Friday. Would be good to know someone else out on the roads!
Also I think the course must be changing as we haven’t gotten the route yet. It came out the weekend before in prior years. I’m guessing the rains and flooding has wreaked havoc out there
They are too good to be true. The number one drawback is the cutout in the center for Selcof’s aero stem. Selcof don’t make the stem…no problem practically since any old stem will work but aesthetically it looks bad. I put a strip of 3" electrical tape over the gap and it actually looks pretty clean.
If Selcof made the stem again they’d sell a few to me for sure.
They seem heavy for carbon bars but I had a set of aluminum profile design aeros with a regular 40mm aluminum drop bar and the selcof setup saved me a little over 220 grams.
Anyhow, I’m gonna buy another set and put them on my road bike. If my tape measure tells the truth I’ll be able to screw on the extensions, move my saddle forward a gob, and have a half-assed time trial bike.
without spilling the beans, they’ll have to change the course for sure. Especially in that area between Alma and Alta Vista. It just flat won’t work. You can leave a muddy b road in & it’s just a pain in the posterior/extra expense.
But you can’t ask riders to make swift river crossings.
And I’ve heard rumors of blind descents that are washed out big time.
So the DK crew are working overtime, I’m sure. But don’t worry. That crew are as good as gold. They will keep you safe.
Yeah, I saw an image of the combo and thought it looked pretty sweet, and good value. I might investigate and see whether there are any on eBay… Thanks for your feedback!
Tomorrow! Good luck everyone. Let’s hope the rain is of the cooling and refreshing kind instead of the driving and oppressing kind.
Best of luck to all DK riders!
@aydraper GOOD RIDE! You may have a dodgy back from time to time but you make up for it by having THREE TIMEs THE GUTS of the average rider. Epic 1st DK for you. Inspirational.
For those that don’t know, aydraper went into the North KS hills with me and I couldn’t hold his wheel.
It looked like one hell of a course.
it was awesome!
I’m not going to re-hash the whole thing. All the quirky details on my strava description.
@Brennus Thanks. That was one tough day! While you may not have held my wheel, I believe you still beat me at the end. Must have passed me in the light as i limped in.
It was great meeting you and I hope we get to ride it together again!
Updated: 4 time FAT Bike winner. LSD training does work
This is my goal ride for 2020 I am just hoping to get in. I will be in masters class. Got some 200k gravel races between now and then to get ready.
He is an endurance machine. Here is his next planned event.
Well he is a prosecutor so relentless focus is a skill
Question for all you who have attended DK- How did you get to Emporia?
Google tells me it is a 22 hour drive (from Canada). Flying seems like a good option, but how does one get from KC to Emporia? Bus? Carrying a bike bag around is also a pain, and bikeflights quoted me an arm and a leg for shipping.
Just wondering what others with long hauls have done, and… was it worth it?
Rental car from KC airport.
