At the risk of pointing out the obvious analogy, the rear fan is “drafting” behind you.
OK, did my first workout with the Sharper Image Fly 01 last night.
Initial impressions from testing showed:
- Setting 1 is akin to a mild breeze and I could only see using it if I was ducting the coldest winter temps to it like I do with my front fans.
- Setting 2 is a bit more but still below the low setting on even my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan.
- Setting 3 seems decent and something I can use.
- Setting 4 is close to the high setting for my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan used at the top front. It is close to low or mid setting on the larger Lasko fan I use at the rear.
Notably with this fan, the air stream is NARROW when compared to the Lasko fans. It is maybe 1/2 or 2/3 as wide and stay very narrow even 3-4 feet away from the outlet. The flow is also not very tall. It is a bit more than the narrow width, but I’d almost call this square in shape.
I will try to get some measurements and better comparison between my Lasko’s for reference.
- TL:DR = But from these testing above and the ride below seem to place this fan as parallel to my smallest Lasko (Stanely) fan.
- Sort of disappointing if I’m honest, with the only thing I can say makes it better is the remote. But considering that I only envision using the top two settings, I can’t say it is enough of a difference to be a clear winner.
- Couple that with what I see as a sale price of around $50 USD for the Lasko (Stanely) I use at the front, the additional $40 for the FLY 01 is not worth it for a remote.
Based on that testing, I chose to use this at the top front location rather than the rear that I had originally expected prior to testing. It fit well on the same stand and got the flow aligned well. I went to the max setting only moments into my workout which parallels what I do with my small Lasko. The extra narrow flow works fine with my placement and still hits my head, face and upper chest as well as my Lasko.
I was a bit annoyed with the similarity to the old fan and that this wasn’t notably better. Perhaps I had my expectations set too high, but this is just a good blower fan, comparable to the smaller Lasko’s, and not on par with the bigger ones. I may try one more workout with it, but I think this fan is either going back or getting gifted to a local friend that could benefit from a proper blower fan over a regular one.
Bummer @mcneese.chad - seems both of our experiments straying from Lasko were disappointing! The Pro Laskos, especially when <$70 seems like a sweetspot, no pun intended. I noticed other posts talking about a Lasko MAX Performance, which adds a wider air column and potentially more power, but seems like they are discontinued.
