Garmin Connect outage

Ah, that’s a convenient excuse for when my coach asks me for results for my 5k time trial that I didn’t do this morning.
Silver linings, I guess

ANT+ does have file transfer.
Thats how most of their pre 2012 gear works.

Really? Never got that to work on my Edge 500, can’t see to do it with my Edge 530 having an ANT+ dongle

I came here yesterday several times to find a thread about why it was down! Glad we finally caught up.

Ummm - not good!

A new era, to think of architecture, with autonomous devices, that can handle outages,
where data resides on the units, can sync between each other and computer without any internet, and share with others over various ways, including but not limited to only internet.

Servers can go down, power can fail, mobile phone networks can fail.
But positioning is getting more and more critical and should work even when all connectivity is gone.

I’m new here and had to manually input my first workout into the garmin - just following the detailed instructions shown when you click on the TR workout and putting it in step-by-step. Wasn’t too hard but it’s a bit fiddly on an 830. Learnt a lot about workouts on the Garmin (which I’d never used before).

The DCR how-to article is up on getting your activities off your gizmos and into your software

Not seeing detailed instructions? I see only the inside/outside buttons and “push to Garmin” which of course, doesn’t complete as Garmin Express is down as part of the ecosystem. Are there download instructions somewhere else? Jonesin’ for Avalanche Spire +1 yet today!

Looks like there may be truth in the Ransomware rumours. Not many other things take a whole org the size of Garmin down

The instructions to send your workout to your gizmo would be the same as to send to Garmin Connect…

(Edit; - everything above here in my post is wrong, it’s pointed out this is instruction for completed workouts, not the preworkout file. IF you can get a workout file though, the steps below to put it on your garmin still apply)

… you’ll just be placing the fit file directly on your device via usb instead:

  1. Download the workout file (skip down to “Obtaining the .fit Workout File”)
  2. Plug in device via USB. Your device should appear as a drive in your operating system’s file manager
  3. Open Garmin device folder
  4. Open NewFiles
  5. Copy your .FIT workouts file(s) into the NewFiles folder. Note: some devices may require you to place the file directly in the “Workouts” folder.
  6. Eject device
  7. You should see your workout under the workout under Training > Workouts> Workout Title. If you don’t see it immediately you may need to restart your device.

I couldn’t work out how to download the fit file. I just followed these to make it on the garmin - they show up when I click on the workout in calendar on the web.

Wouldn’t want to do it often as was a bit tedious but it worked!

I find it amusing that in the shadow of what could be a MASSIVE sports tech data compromise… the world scrambles for ways to upload the same data to another cloud service.

@c-h-a-d, those instructions reference moving a completed ride file into CG. I’m looking to get the workout file/instructions onto my Garmin so I can do the workout. I’m good at importing the completed workout/ride into my TR online calendar.

@Velo-city, yup I see the detailed workout instructions. I am trying to avoid recreating the workout manually…

@GPLama So true and myopic of us:)

and there really are bigger implications of what’s happening. Will be interesting to see if/when/how the popular media picks up on this, or the tech media gives a thorough assessment of what it could mean in the bigger scale of things.

Knowing Garmin, it was probably just a new version of their own software that they pushed to their servers.

Perhaps try using a different USB cable. Some are power only, which won’t transfer data.

Oh gosh someone will see that I quit on the 5th interval of my last VO2 workout. I shudder to think. I thought I had that secret locked up forever.

That’s pretty much the general attitude towards privacy and security that ends up with situations like they’re in. Nobody gives a shit, until they do… then it’s too late. Nothing changes. As I’ve said, it’s amusing… until we know more.

I promise I won’t ever give a shit if someone wants my Garmin data. You uploaded your workout to Strava today but you are amused that Garmin users are looking for an alternative platform to upload their data?

To clarify, what exactly is your attitude about uploading data to alternative cloud services?

Maybe I’m missing your point.
