Garmin Edge 1040 Released

Here is my 1030 Plus on same mount if it helps.

Amazing this morning on the 1040 solar. Followed a route, segments, climbpro, varia, di2, etc and lost 2% battery after 2:20.

Gained 11 min back in solar as last 5 miles sun came out. 46 hours left on battery end of ride :flushed:. 3K elevation gain on 37 miles.

Also noticed on GC which I use a lot you can no go into map and click on climbs and it shows your results. Even can drag over the elevation and does stats like other graphs. Also you can click on mile markers and shows you the lap times.

Nice! Looked at my last navigated ride with climbs from April 30th, and no such GC climbing goodness. New feature for all? Maybe, I’ll have to load a route with a climb.

Looking at yesterday’s flat ride, I am seeing lap times after tapping the lap markers!

FYI - the Quarq TyreWiz is not (yet?) supported on the 1040. This means if you, like me, have the TyreWiz to check starting tire pressure and possibly check during the ride (“the tire feels squishy”), you’ll have to use the SRAM app.

I think it shows when you do a course and climbpro comes up

Last I did that was April 30th and I pulled up GC and it shows no climbs on the map. Guess I’m overdue for a climbing ride.

I raised this directly with SRAM on a call a few days ago. It was noted. I’ll keep on them about this as it’s something I use myself.

Side Note: I’ve also reached out to the author behind the My Bike Radar Traffic (Radar data field that counts cars, records location/speeds in the FIT file, etc). He’s on an epic ride at the moment and plans on adding support when he’s back home in a few days.

Maybe and if I were to guess it only shows up with GC being the newest and following a course and a doing a few climbs via climbpro.

Have you raised the question of making a tire pressure ANT+ profile with SRAM? That really feels like the solution.

Everything I can find indicates ANT+ TPMS wasn’t ever ratified after being thrown around years ago. Strangely enough the TyreWiz are listed as having support… with no compatible head units. :man_shrugging:t2: https://www.thisisant.com/directory/tyrewiz

It’d be nice to have the data again on the 1040 regardless of how they do it. I hope we’re not seeing some kind of “Well, FU, buy our Hammerhead Karoo if you want that support” from SRAM now they’ve added support for TyreWiz on those units.

Ugh. Between this and the Shimano shifting debacle, the whole idea of ANT+ profiles seems to be falling apart.

Is there some sort of estimate for the 840/540 release? I don’t want the large unit, but I’m getting FOMO, lol.

For anyone who has one a 1040, did the 12.15 firmware fix the sensor dropout issues I’ve been reading about? Or does Garmin have more work to do?

I’ve had my 1040 Solar since just about day 1 and haven’t had any sensor dropout problems. Using Assioma pedals, Garmin HR, Garmin Varia, and Di2, haven’t noticed any drops yet.

Yes all as one route. I would end and save at the end of the day. Next day i would load the route into navigation. It then asked if i wanted to navigate to the start. I said no and off it webt frim where i was. One night i deviated about 50 km off route. The next day i loaded it and it did not re route to the course. I had no issues. I k ew where i was and just zoomed out on the map. Amazing device with a couple of small issues. My old wahoo bolt could not have attempted this trip. This i know for a fact as i tried it with it a few years back. It was quite useless.

Never had a drop with the original FW and new one is about the same. Had 1 drop of varia and shimano di2 today but went into sensors, enabled and disabled and was fine the rest of my ride.

Ok - interesting as I could not get it to load my 600k audax, I had to split it into two. I think thats what was causing my crashing, it was set as the active route so every time I turned the garmin on it activated that route for navigation and crashed again.

I did the ride though, using two routes was fine.

Solar charging os pretty good for multiday stuff - over the 25.5 hour ride time I got 3 hours extra battery from solar, with pretty mixed British weather (some rain, some sun, lots of cloud…). Obviously on a two day audax/ultra that’s not so important, but on a longer event that would be a meaningful amount of extra time to add on every day.

Snapshot from Saturday evening:

Sunday wasn’t as sunny unfortunately so only got another hour.

No sensor drops (Quarq, SRAM AXS, Wahoo HRM… no TyreWiz :rage:) on my 9hr ride (77mi, 10,300’, gravel/pavement, following a course) Saturday but several screen freezes, or rather pauses. I’d swipe and nothing would change and the display was noticeably frozen (ie power / HR / alt static) but after a couple / few seconds the screen would change to whatever my seemingly futile swipes took me too. In other words, it received the swipes but froze for a while before acting. On the plus side, the clear sky (and 85-98F / 30-37C) gave me 3h2m ‘ride time gained’, so I had that going for me.

Sks also claims ant plus support

I wonder if Garmin uses a different ant protocol:

Did you share the crashing route with Garmin support so they can fix the bug?
