Garmin Edge 530 or Wahoo Element Bolt for Outdoor Workouts

FWIW, if you can afford it, I recommend the Edge 830 due to the touch screen. I had both (ended up returning the 530 due to early production issues with the buttons sticking) and opted for the 830. Way easier to navigate screens, and it works when wet / sweaty.

Earlier, you requested reviews and I didn’t see any replies, so here are a couple from DCR.

Karoo 2 pre-orders went live today.

Yup, I randomly found out about it yesterday, didn’t get a notification email, so my pre-order is for the December units. I figure I have time until then for reviews to come in. DCRainmaker made a decent hands-on of it on youtube, too.

Correct me if I’m wrong here but in terms of outside workouts the target wattage is always displayed as a range on a wahoo. For example, the bolt with display “280-300 watts” for the interval rather than simply displaying the exact target wattage the workout calls for, which in this case would be the average of the 2 at 290 watts.
In turn, I believe the garmin will display exact wattage.

I have a wahoo and was a bit confused when I did my first workout outdoors. The warmup displayed something like “0-180 watts” so I went 180. Took a while to figure out what was going on. And then on the hard blocks I was always aiming for the higher number. You end up having to do math. Not ideal but not a big deal.

This was brought up in the podcast or in the forum. It’s not a TR issue. I believe they said it was something to do with wahoo.

I don’t know about Garmin head units, but on my Fenix 5, the outdoor workouts give targets in a range as well.

I am just happy to keep it somewhere in the green when doing outdoor workouts.

Yes, my Garmin 530 has a field to display target wattage, and a field to display a range.

This is also true on a Garmin. At least with Garmin, this is a TrainerRoad decision. Workouts I sync from TrainingPeaks will correctly show a warmup range.

For example here is TR’s Eclipse outside workout:

Warm Up:

  • Ride for 13 minutes gradually raising your power from 124 to 223.

Main Set:

  • 3x20 minutes between 218-233 with 7 minutes rest between intervals.

Cool Down:

  • Spin easy for 3 minutes, longer if you can.

If I create that as a TrainingPeaks workout, with a 13 minute warmup with a range of 124 and 223W, that is exactly what I get on my Garmin. TrainerRoad sends it to the Garmin as 0 to 223. That is a decision that TrainerRoad made, it is not a limitation of the Garmin. The Garmin does have a limit on the total number of workout steps (50? not sure), but with such a simple workout I could even create a warmup stepping from 124 to 223 with 1 minute steps and it would be fine.
