I haven’t looked at the 1040 specs or review but I’m interested in what the 540/840 may be. I’m currently awaiting the arrival of my 5th replacement unit that started as a 530 but is now an 830. I’ve had 3 530’s and an 830 all of which end up with malfunctioning barometric altimeters. I’d say they’ve used random number generators instead but all except the 830 worked for a little while but then ended up either way over or way under estimating ascent/descent data. So my wish for the new 840 is a functional altimeter.
It looks to have a much better screen in the DCR videos to me
1040 looks cool, but like the others before it in that series I’m not a fan of the size. Just don’t want a bike computer that big. Hopefully the 840/540 are not too far behind.
From the voice over, it sounds like DCRainmaker is attributing the greater readability to font / UI changes, and not to the screen. He explicitly says the screen resolution is the same
I don’t care how it’s done, I just want it to look better, have a better interface, and be easier to see and I think it does by a long shot. There are times I’m out riding and I find my 1040+ hard to see. From his rain video, I think they’ve come a long way. It’s the only thing I’ve seen so far that makes me interested in buying it early and not waiting for the discounts.
How long for the 840 now the 1040’s been released? Has there been a trend on previous releases?
My 530’s altimeter just started acting up a few weeks ago. I didn’t realize this was a common issue though. Any idea what the cause is?
Is it possible to change to GPS altitude? Obviously not ideal, but just wondering as I’ve just received my 530. I don’t really care for barometric pressure, or altimeter, but having said that I do want accurate climbing/descending metres so
Just change it to automatic in GC based on GPS if it bothers you that much…
It doesn’t, I was just curious if there was a workaround for an issue that some people are having. I haven’t played with mine enough yet to find all the settings.
Thanks for the tip though
No problem and I know if something is wrong with your unit and does this you need to activate it. Some people actually have it on all the time as the weather can make it fluctuate a little regardless.
I do not know what the cause is but I think it’s quite common in the 530/830. If you search for edge 530 elevation problem, you’ll find it seems to happen often. I did read an interesting potential fix on the Garmin forums involving a food container vacuum technique that essentially lowers the pressure in the container to what it would be at very high altitudes & that seems to have fixed it for one of the users I read about. Haven’t tried it but if the next one fails, I might try it. The latest device, an 830, was bad out of the box, apparently. It underreported my first ride by over 20%. On the second, over reported by 60%. Keep in mind these are refurbished units, though. Garmin claims they’re fully tested but this one didn’t seem to have been thoroughly repaired.
I’ve been applying corrections manually after each ride. What’s more annoying is that the unit will not display the road gradient correctly, which isn’t a huge deal, but it’s something I like to see.
I’ve used the 830 for many years and was getting tired of the inconsistent Bluetooth performance, I purchased a 1040 and did find the performance on every front to be much more consistent, however the size is overwhelming and I swapped it out for the Edge Explore 2. The Explore 2 is definitely a step down in features and I miss the Strava app and segments slightly but have found workarounds for routes, I don’t use power or advanced training features. Better accuracy, speed, interface, consistent notifications and the music control is a welcome addition. I believe Garmin is prioritizing user experience over innovation and possibly improving the over all value of their product. The 840 should be a nice offering, wish it was out now.
For me I I’d love to see Strava segments work the way they do on Wahoo units. I’m not into using Strava for route planning and consequently I can’t get segments easily.
How do they work on Wahoo? I’m not sure why you bring up route planning but the segment feature on the 830 does not really have anything to do with Strava route planning. On my 830, I simply have to “star” a segment on Strava and then Garmin will show me the segment data screen when I’m approaching it.
I had a Wahoo a while back and I remember it working the same, with the 830 having much better on screen visuals.
Strava (life) segments do not show up on a Garmin if routing/navigation is active.
Exception: the route was created using Strava. In this case the segment informations are embedded into the track (and show up)
This is not a limitation on a Wahoo device.
Ah, I haven’t noticed this but that’s super annoying and surprising that garmin has that limitation. I wonder if there’s a technical reason or if it’s an actual design choice they are sticking to.
Hi guys, something tells me (steep discounts on the Edge 530 and 830) that Edge 540 and 840 are right behind the corner. We could see them before Christmas or in early Q1.
I’ve written up a summary of what I think we can expect. The biggest question mark for me is 840 Solar. I don’t think it will come because it would cannibalize the 1040 Solar too much.
I also don’t think we should expect too much, but 1040 and Explore 2 gave us some clues.
Don’t think so either… Garmin tends to wait 1 or 2 generations before big features like solar trickle down. But it will come eventually. If you see the number of watches with solar, I guess the 550 and 850 will sure have solar options
