Garmin Forerunner 255/955 Released

Don’t know if anyone explicitly answered this. But extending display with Edge vs Watch is trash. You only get the data fields that you have on your watch on the Edge + total time and total distance.
The Edge only does the display the actual GPS/sensors is on the watch
You’re much better off just recording on the Edge and getting the better user experience.
And if you want to be pedantic about the physio stuff record on the watch as well and delete it afterwards. The only reason I could see to record on both would be the HR on the watch wouldn’t be as good if it’s just using the wrist HR and you want that for the recovery time. You would also get better recovery time metrics using the watch. E.g. if you bike then go chop wood all afternoon then the watch will pick that up, only having the Edge wouldn’t

TLDR: If you want both, get both. Record on Edge, use watch for recovery off the watch

I tried the extended display with the 1030 and 945. With 10 fields on the 1030 I stopped wearing the watch. It made no sense at all to wear the watch as it just put another device at risk. I also hate wrist HR so I use a strap. I do exactly what you said. The edge is for the bike and the watch is for everything else.

In fact now with the 1040 I am down to a max of 7 fields on the screen at a time.

Works for me.

Sorry if so, and you are probably aware of this, but isn’t the idea of Extended display for multi sport events, where you would want the entire event recorded in one, but couldn’t do it with a Edge, but don’t want to look at your wrist during the cycling event, seems like something I would use, if I did multi sport

You can record the entire event on your watch. The only thing extended display gains you is that you don’t have to (additionally) start the bike ride on the Edge. So literally one press.

In turn, you lose about half the display on the Edge, and the ability to lay out the screen like you want. It just doesn’t seem like a great tradeoff.

Wouldn’t you still suffer from duel recording, the edge having the power data, that you want in the full recording, which would you exclude from your power data, I’ve got not inclination to use this feature (or do a triathlon) but I think I agree with two of the points in the dc rainmaker summary / conclusion / going forward section (tech company and needed features)

The Forerunner can record the power data even if the Edge is already recording it. You can just delete the Edge activity.

Yeah, and when I’ve done tri’s I’ve just pressed the start button on the Edge when I’m on my out of transition, it’s an extra button press but I get the data format I want, and then I don’t look at my watch until I’m off the bike and starting the run

Same here, i have my edge 530 ready, in the profile i want. I get in transition and press the start button so it can find gps while i change, and by the time i cross the mount-line it whether has auto-started to record or i just press the button.
I don’t bother with extended display.

Just to follow up on this, I got and use both the Forerunner 955 and Edge 1040. I setup a shortcut on the watch to open Broadcast HR and turn that on when not using my chest strap, and I primarily record bike rides on my Edge. It syncs everything including training status etc. to Connect and back to the watch perfectly seamlessly. So much so that I don’t let TR or Zwift push to Garmin, and instead rely solely on my Edge recording (as it both gets more data points and types like L/R balance, and reports training effect and stamina). I use the Forerunner for all-day HR and HRV monitoring, and recording running, track/velodrome, and cyclocross activities. It also serves as a backup if something goes wrong with the Edge during an event.

So I got, use and love both!
