La Vuelta a España 2021 Thread

Pidcock is just here to ride into form for the Road Race World Championships. He hasn’t done any serious training since winning the Olympic Gold medal. He’s a smart lad and doesn’t want to burn himself out with a serious go at GC in a Grand Tour yet. He’s keeping in fun now and has plenty of years to target a Grand Tour GC win.

Guys, going for GC is crazy talk, regardless of his desires. It’ not even certain he can finish it while actually helping the team. Heck, he hasn’t ever started a 1 week stage race as a WT pro :flushed:

I think the bet here is that he will not finish.

Considering grabbing a VPN…I have access to Peacock, which is fine, but if I could watch the GCN coverage, I would probably be happier.

A few VPN Newbie questions:

  • Does it work on just PC’s / Macs or is there an app for iOS devices, too?
  • Do you log into the VPN every time you want to watch something, or is it a constant service once you start the service and login the first time?
  • Does it automatically give you a “location” that will work for whatever feed you are trying to watch, or do you need to try several different ones?
  • Anything else I need to know / consider?

Thanks!

  1. It works on IOS and Android. There is an app.
  2. You only use it when you want to. You go to the app, and pick which server you want to connect to and disconnect when you want to disconnect.
  3. You can pick whichever location you like. With Nord, you are picking a country, and some countries have 1 server, some have multiple. I pick GB, just because.
  4. Nord runs some pretty good long-term discounts. So consider those. I think I got 2 years for like $80.

Nailed it, I second the Nord recommendation. Only one thing I would add: it’s very hard to make any VPN work with Apple TV, and I’ve had no success with AirPlay while on VPN. So I stick to the iPad for watching geo-restricted stuff.

Hmmm…that is kinda disappointing. What about just Screen Mirroring vs. AirPlay?

No, same issue. You can make it work by changing your router’s DNS settings so that it uses Nord servers, or installing VPN on your router if your router supports that. Not worth the hassle for me but it might be for you. Note this same issue exists for all VPNs, not just Nord.

On topic, I’m betting on Roglič but would love to see Bernal compete for the win.

yes, i can’t mirror my android app to my TV either on VPN. I believe it’s a VPN encryption related limitation.

How would you like to watch? Do you use AirPlay? Not an expert but I’ve been running VPNs for 20 years (to remotely connect to servers at work).

This is an interesting quick read:

I’m planning to turn Peacock Premium on again for $5, and put a reminder on calendar to disable in 28 days. Its just easier.

Most days I’ll be running it on my laptop (3rd) screen in the office…on weekends, I’d like to be able to watch on my TV. I can hook up my PC if necessary. Not a big deal.

I get Peacock Premium free with my Xfinity subscription, so that is definitely the easiest answer…but will depend on who the announcers are. Anthony McCrossen and Simon Gerrains were kind of a “snooze duo” for the Tour. They weren’t “bad”…just a little lifeless.

Yeah a VPN with good software will make that easy, as will connecting laptop to TV.

Same opinion on the snooze duo.

yep i see it now. first 6 stages are able to be recorded

I’m not sure how you are doing mirroring, but I’m able to mirror my Samsung phone to Samsung TV just fine.

@Power13 You may also consider using something like SurfShark (you get like 80% off using code Dowsett) or Mozilla’s VPN, as they are much cheaper. I use Express VPN, but I think it’s overkill for when you just need to un-geoblock something.

So who are the commentators on Peacock?

Based on today I am pretty certain he will finish, if he wants, but might choose not too.

Interesting that he sat up, but is still ahead of a few, I’m surprised about that, said legs / post Olympic but he could have been top 10. Oh, and equal with Lopez without trying.

As ^ other said, he’s smart and will play the long game (not just this year) he has got the talent.

Is the commercials on the stream from peacock (i know the $10 version shouldn’t have any, just wondering if the $5 subscription does)

If this is similar to the tour, if you run an ad-blocker, then the coverage is add free. You do get a pop-up asking you to turn off your adblocker, but you just need to hit dismiss and everything works normally.

Nope, no commercials on the $5 plan as far as I can tell.
