Is it just me who doesn’t get ‘cycling socks’? How are they different from, say…socks?!?
I always just wear first pair that my hand lands on in sock drawer (normal socks, black work socks, whatever) and never had single issue. I was bought some posh cycling socks last Christmas and they are perfectly nice…but no different to any other socks!
For the British/Euro guys I can highly recommend Brav socks.
If you are a Welsh Triathlon member you get a free pair with your membership package.
This is what I came here to post. I use these highly rated Saucony socks and I’ve never even felt there might be a reason to get cycling-specific socks.
For fashion, I understand. Sure, I might want different socks in colder weather, but I don’t know if I need to pay more for cycling-specific socks.
Agreed. I use running socks when running as find do help prevent blisters etc…but for cycling - anything will do!
I never saw a point in spending on socks. I just bought some cheap cycling socks. Then I tried Isadore socks and they are so much more comfortable than anything I had before.
I like the more toned down look from fingers crossed (https://fingerscrossed.design/). And those neon F* Yeah socks from 8Lumen on a day with good legs.
Tbh it’s more than likely just a fashion/group identification thing.
I do appreciate a good pair of wool athletic socks just because they regulate temperature and moisture/sweat really well for me, but honestly I just dig a pair of loud, brightly colored cycling socks because I think they look cool!
Yeah, sock choice is absolutely part of the whole hive mind / exclusionary approach that gives rise to crap like The Rules.
My right foot is so goofy that the only sock I’ve found that keeps it from sliding around in my shoe (and this is with a Bontrager insert) is a semi-padded ankle-length sock intended for diabetics – Dr. Specified black socks. I really would like to get some custom orthotics so I could expand my choice of socks, but right now, this is what I got.
And, yes, I do also wear sleeveless. Fight me.
I was of the same opinion on socks in general until I got my first pair of merino wool socks. They were life changing and now I’m a sock snob. The added cost is worth not having stinky sweaty feat every day. The same can be said for a pair of great breathing cycling socks. Especially considering they have good compression and never bunch. The style-factor is an added bonus.
Band of Climbers make some really nice socks Cycling Socks - Band of Climbers
They also do some super nice prints.
I like to see although I am still solidly in the minority, I am not alone. Ankle socks is the only thing I wear. I don’t like the feeling of socks above my ankles, and so I never wear them. Even dress socks, I just go with a dark ankle sock. When it comes to cycling this is no different, its only ever ankle socks for me.
+1 Swiftwick
Never heard of Swiftwick before so interested to check them out. I like long socks, and thin. So you don’t know your wearing them.
Swiftwick pursuit (merino wool) hands down. Johnathan mentioned them in a podcast a while back. Now that is all i own for cycling, leisure and work!
Swiftwick socks last forever and ever and ever. They’re worth it
Shimano sphyre
Darn tough merino wool socks are good too. Never tried Swiftwick
I got some of these after you mentioned them, they’re great. Good price, good length, nice and thin. Thanks for the recommendation.
Just tell people you wear low cut socks, just like 2 X Vuelta Stage Winner Ben King.
+1 Swiftwick…simply the best !!!
