Let's Talk Socks

I have a few socks from Twin Six that I like, the sMilage one is a favorite.

Ostroy socks are decent.

I also have some Eliel socks that have a nice color combo.

I got some Assoss winter weight wool blend socks and those are amazing!

They have discounts periodically but sometimes it’s ‘just’ 15%. I have not seen them ever do more than 25% so now would be a good time to stock up.

I’ll all about Twin Six socks. I like the colors/style, the foot volume is good, and I like the 5-6" length.

Anybody have recommendations for good wool socks for cold (well, at least Bay Area cold so low 50s) weather? I don’t wear booties, and can get by with just toe covers if necessary.

Me: Okay, maybe I’ll get some good wool sock recommendations.

Me: Oh, nevermind…

I like these. I have even been wearing them in the home office lately (stuck working from home) Swiftwick- PURSUIT SEVEN UltraLight Cycling and Mountain Biking Socks, Merino Wool https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08DYFCXZX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_USCTFbTVE5DQ0

I was looking at those in the four height category. How warm are they / what temperature range would you wear them in wearing just cycling shoes without shoe covers or toe covers?

I love Swiftwick. I like the regular Pursuit – not the Ultralight ones (I don’t like thin socks for cycling). The Pursuit are great for me in temps down to freezing, though I couple them with toe covers or full shoe covers when it’s below ~40º. Even on a fall day up to ~60º they are comfortable. I also really like their Vision limited editions in a Merino blend – they are excellent. Swiftwick socks last for a long time – I have many pairs and don’t think I’ve thrown any away or worn any out in the seven years I’ve been wearing them.

I live where it’s warm, so even on a day when a ride starts in the high 30s, it gets to 55-60 by the end of the ride. I wear these when the ride starts anywhere below 50 and just add toe warmers when needed. I don’t find them to be overly hot even when it gets into the 60s.

Give some thought to if 4” is long enough if you don’t want a big gap between the sock and your warmers.

Pongo socks for me…

Have just ordered these, Silverlight socks, mainly for hiking but know I’ll be using them on the trail too… Been a user of Smartwool for years, can’t beat Merino, but find they don’t last long. These do appear to be a good compromise, will report back.

It’s probably a fashion faux pas, but I prefer a gap between the top of my socks and the bottom of my knee warmers. I run “hot” normally, so this gap is helpful for me to not over heat / feel more comfortable.

So I’m down to the following two. Has anyone tried both and can provide plus / minuses?

I’ve never used wool defeet socks, but from previous experience with other pairs, my Swiftwick socks have lasted much longer than Defeet ones. They are also generally more compressive. Having said that, these ARE wool, so even the Swiftwick ones will get fuzzy after just a few wears and are less compressive than normal socks.

Swiftwick Pursuit: They’ve lasted me a long time – 2 or 3 years – and, aside from wearing them for cycling, I wear them casually and for running, which usually wears out socks faster. They are really comfortable: they compress nicely, and don’t bunch up. They also maintain a nicely balanced elasticity, meaning that they are not too tight, even though they still compress a little, and the fabric-weave can stretch a lot yet remain very resilient. They are one of the best socks that Swiftwick makes – like a merino version of their Aspire (which are awesome and last forever), but with a little more softness.

Thanks again for the Swiftwick Pursuit recommendation. I wore mine for the first time today - 60 mile ride - and love them. They were just what I need. They were warm enough for the start of the ride at ~40 F, and then weren’t too hot when it hit ~60 on the way home.

I’ve been wearing the Smartwool merino cycling socks and really like them. A little pricey, but have had great luck with their hiking specific socks lasting for years, so expecting the same from these. Comes in both a short and longer version.

The Swiftwicks are great, but they are hard/expensive to get im Europe. Will try the Smartwool ones, thanks!

I ordered the Swiftwick Aspire, quite nice.
