Midwest Events for *2023*

I have friends that have done the 60 and say it is a great event, they aren’t the most technical riders so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Driftless 100 was really good! Beautiful and relentless course. I’m glad we didn’t let the forecast deter us as the actual race day was pretty decent compared to what it could have been.

Anyone signed up for Hungry Bear in Cable, WI, in 2 weeks? I’m signed up for the middle ~60 mile distance. It was a fun race last year with pretty fast conditions, so I’m hoping this year turns out similarly.

Just found this thread. I’ll be home in Central Michigan starting mid-July. First year of racing in a long time. Looking forward to an eventful 2024, so to warm up signed up for the DTE Down country enduro, Iceman, and planning for the Triple Trail Challenge. I’ll plan to take the kiddos up to TC to slush with me, and hoping to take them to the DTE DCE.

Anyone doing the Rapha 10K on the 28th out in Stockton, IL? Was a pretty good event last year….just watch the descent into the gully about 3 miles in!!

Did the Bear 100 in Laona, WI this weekend. I did the 108 mile route through the Nicolet National Forest. I’d say its 80% offoad, with a few pavement sections bridging the offroad sections. There were two really tough sections. The first was a logging road climb and descent that was filled with some rather large baby heads. This lead straight into a sandy, rough double track section. The whole section took about 20-25 minutes cover. This is where the lead group finally broke up. We were 12 going in and I ended up in the second group of two or three. The other really tough section was a 2 mile jeep track that was pure rutty mud. I ended up running a large section. The ruts were so deep at points that I swear they were thigh high.

Otherwise the first half was really fast gravel and the second half was super wet sandy “gravel”. I did the first half in around 2:45 and the second half in 3:45.

Conditions were pretty tough the second half as it was raining pretty much the whole time. I finished 9th at 6:25:04. My goal was sub 7 hours, so I blew that away even with the awful second half.

All in all this is a well put on event. For the most part it’s self supported aside from two water stops in the second half. There was a convenience store around half way if people wanted/needed to stop as well. I’ll be back next year for sure and people in WI or upper midwest should put this one on their list to do. Great course in an amazing part of the state.

Although I didn’t do the full 100 miles of the Driftless 100, I will say is was beautiful and a real challenging course. If you like hills that you can not roll most of the time, and want a try a very grassroots based race. I would give it a consideration next year.

Just signed up for the KKD in Farmington MN the other day. Has anyone done it before/know anyone who has done it? I can’t find any results from last years event. I’d like to see the times so I can have a better expectation of the day.

Routes are posted for the Rapha 10K event next weekend in Stockton, IL…

Did it last year and I have ridden a fair amount out there in addition to the event…worth going if you have the time. And there is a pretty good brewery not far away in Lena, IL for your apres-ride needs.

Why drive that far if you can ride all the way there? GLRs 600K is the same day. Start in St Charles and ride lots of the same area.

How did the day go for you? I did the Full/Full of 38 miles single track and the 78 mile gravel. Was a brutal weekend with no great results but put some good work in the legs heading into Lutsen.

Anyone looking for a fun and hard weekend in a beautiful location should check out the Epic Bike Fest.

Thanks for asking - it went pretty well! I met 2 of the 3 goals: have fun, don’t crash, and don’t finish last. The wet roots caused me to fail bullet point #2 a couple of times just before the timing split at Timber Trail. Thankfully nothing major, just a low side on my hip; right after the rider behind me complimented my descending ability. Ojibwe trail was relentless. I pre-rode a fair amount of it on Friday afternoon, but it was much different conditions in the race between the weather and the people. Everyone around me was chill and the event was great. I second your recommendation, everyone close should check it out. I plan to be back next year, probably for the half again. I’d like to be right around 2 hours.

I can’t imagine doing the full-full [at my current fitness level]. I rode “Flow Mama” with my brother yesterday and saw some one of the apparent sand pit ATV trails they were sending the riders down.

Good luck at Lutsen!

Anyone doing the ORA Trails Fest this weekend? It looks like this is a new event? I can’t find any information from previous years but I’m curious about it.

I dont know anything about the short track or enduro on Saturday but Sunday is the WORS race and I will be racing that, or should I say I will be doing a time trial while the real racing is way in front of me. So far this year the attendance for the WORS events has been awesome. Its worth doing if you like XC racing

I’m glad it’s having a bit of a renaissance.

A few more days until Lumberjack. Looks like some rain tomorrow which should help the trail, and a nice cool 80F day. I’m jumping in wave 2 and hoping for sub 10hr but I’ve never done a 100 before. Good luck to anyone else in it.
