Morton’s neuroma

Good luck! That will be a good test.

Mine was so bad I couldn’t go more than a mile or two before it felt like someone was sticking a knife into my foot. Or at least I imagine that’s what a knife through the foot might feel like since I’ve never really had that happen.

@kiwiscott Coming to this thread just now. Where are you at now with this? I got a new pair of shoes only a month ago. Have been riding them with occasional mild irritation in the balls of the left foot. Then did a couple sweet spot sessions in the trainer this weekend where it got irritated. This was literally just a few days ago and now it’s constantly hurting. This seems like a quick onset, what was your experience? It felt like I really didn’t have a warning and then BAM I can’t even walk without pain.

I started trainer road SSBMV1 few weeks back. I got neuroma few days ago. It felt like something sharp went into my foot. I went to a podiatrist and he gave me a cortisol shot. Also told me to to get orthotics.

I have wide feet, so my current cheap cycling shoes that I bought 6 years ago for $35 were definitely NOT made to be used extensively on a plan like trainer road. They do NOT fit well.

I just recently bought the s-works 7 wide shoe. I tried the Lake regular fit, and it still wasn’t wide enough. I’m also having trouble finding Bont shoes in the bay.

I have a few questions:

  1. Do you have custom orthotic experience for cycling? I found a fitter that makes custom cycling orthotics based on Retul (I think part of specialized company). Bonus if you can share your experience with custom orthotics for neuroma specifically.

  2. How are the S-Works 7 Wide? Are they wide enough? I had to order online as none of the shops have it in stock.

  3. Those with Neuroma…please tell me it went away and never came back…

Thanks!

Been there and done that. I had injections and it is better. I used to have toe clips and straps that I now realize I tightened way to much.

@nBan Hey just wondering what happened with this for you? I’ve just been wearing a pair of new shoes for about a month. Mild occasional irritation in the ball of the left foot. Then one ride where it gets irritated and now I can’t even walk without pain. Seems like a very rapid onset with little warning signs for me.

If you have been diagnosed with a Morton Neuroma and in fact have one - in my experience its very temperamental and kind of does whatever it wants. Mine never got better even with injections, so I had them cut that sucker out about 5 years ago… I don’t have the pain anymore and I was able to get better stability in that foot. I still get phantom feelings sometimes but I would say its much better than trying to cope with a big’ol irritated nerve

Hey there,

Well its complicated. I got custom orthotics and a boot to sleep with in January. The orthotics immediately helped with walking etc and the pain reduced. I waited until March to try and ride again.

As of now I can manage to ride on the bike, 60 miles, without a lot of pain - although its still there. I have been tardy in stretching specifically for the injury. I haven’t run consistently since the injury. I think I’m confident enough to do it – it will be a gradual return.

My orthotics are great I move them between shoes and use them about 50% of the time. Working from home alot isn’t helping because I wear slippers which I know are killing my feet.

I don’t want to get surgery - I’d by happy to get a cortisone injection if it persists,

All in all - unless I stretch and deliberately walk 1-2 miles per day it gets worse.

Now – to address your onset symptoms. Mine only flared up with exercise, its inflammation. I used ice at first to reduce the inflammation. I was able to avoid pain by doing nothing (which sucked).

All in all – go to your foot doctor (some countries say chiropodist others podiatrist in US) they were quick to diagnose. Some in the forum have got an injection straight away – my doc was more cautious.

I know you are saying this, but as I said above I had the surgery done. I was in a similar situation as you explained here with all the “maintenance” and time it takes to cater to the neuroma. I finally was fed up with it and had the surgery done.

The recovery wasn’t bad and all that was left is a little scar on the top of my foot. I felt so much better after my recovery and regained confidence that I was able to train for 3 full ironman’s, countless half’s and a few marathons after the surgery. That is coming from someone who never ran in their lives.

I am just stating my experience and respect anyone’s opinion as to not have surgery.

I saw a sports podiatrist and he recommended these insoles for my neuroma (low level of constant discomfort stage) - Aetrex Customizable Comfort L2400 Orthotics|Helps Relieve Pressure & Pain

They sell them with and without metatarsal pads and with high and low arch. But it allows you to remove portions of it to relieve pressure from specific areas.

Iv’e only done one ride (about 5hrs) yesterday on them and a 2hr hike the day before, but considering I could do it without pain, it’s looking like they may actually work :crossed_fingers:
