New indoor bike, meet the TrueBike

I have only tried it a couple of times at 75%. It makes the bike feel a bit more like the other indoor trainers, but it seems to stay closer to the target power. Once I get used to this setting, I plan to set it back to 0% and decide which of the settings I prefer.

New video with some bold claims:

Hmmmm…dunno about some of their claims. And pretty damn pricey, too…

But this is what I found kinda suspect…here is their “media table” for 195euro (nice TR Group Workout, though!)

Same table as the KOM table you can buy on Amazon for less than half what they are charging.

Ha, funny on the table.

Yeah, they have been an interesting company from the little I have gathered. Info from Ray about how they setup the pedal feel and ERG mode use was very “non-traditional”. They sure look at stuff from a different direction, which makes some good sense in pushing the direction of these bikes. But they also seem either a bit stubborn or just out of touch with many of the goals and requirements of other riders. The video hints at that, with all the “this is what I like/want” comments.

I also don’t like their structure and some of the flex I have seen in some videos. Certainly different and will be interesting to see where they can take this in light of what I expect will be some 2nd gen smart bikes in the next year or two from the other big guys.

I had a similar reaction to some of the flex…my first reaction was “What the hell is going on there???”

My biggest gripe is the very rearward location of their main support. It leads to a forward tilt/bounce at higher force levels, especially when standing. Seeing his emphasis on the tilt back to move, I think they optimized the rear mass location for as much of the “guts” as possible, which lead them to keep the mount back there too.

That combined with a questionable structure under it leads to the flex that I see as odd at the very least. I do like that they considered some motion with the rubber feet (lateral roll is good IMO), which I see as better than others that aim for ultimate rigidity.

What do you mean by strange flex?
By the way, they did come with an update soon after Ray’s review, providing user adjustment for how ERG mode behaves.

  • When watching from a side view, you can see the bike bounce and pitch in a forward lean direction with each heavy pedal stroke. It pivots from a point behind the bottom bracket and is not what we get with other smart bikes or a regular bike with two spaced contact points outside or on a trainer setup.

Here is a quick sketch to show the direction of angle motion, since there is no front support:

The following videos are what I could find from a quick search, but not sure they are the ones where I first saw the issue.

Ok, I see. Really by far the most movement comes from the rubber feet it is mounted on. The frame of the bike itself feels very solid, even if I press down with all my weight on the handlebars.
