Any concern about Terra Speeds in the Flint Hills? Seem like a fast tire but not sure about durabilityā¦.
They rate out ok on tire rolling resistance. Itās weird that the challenge gateway is rated higher then the Terra speed but everyone says the gateway is to soft and a hassle to deal with. I have ran the Terra speed and Terra trail and they have both been solid. Same casing just different tread.
Personally I donāt feel the Terra speed is a bad tire in terms of protection, but they are not proven like the pathfinders. Iām also 195lbs
I have two thoughts for unbound
Run the fastest/best tire I can and try to break my previous time. If my tire causes me issues it becomes another 200 mile ride but I hung it all out there. I could also swap to spare wheels at a stop.
Run pathfinders and know that I might be a few minutes slower but likely hood of a throw away day is deminished.
Iāll run my 45mm Terra Speed for Barry roubaix.
This is what I have:
Iām one of those who posted about the Challenge Getaways
I have them in the 45c size on 25IW ā> 47.8
Fantastic tyre, rolls fast and supple, (so far) good puncture resistance (even on Alpine gravel descents), looks good and super silent on paved sectionsā¦
But they are tricky as I had to double tape my rims and add a ton of sealant, even using Challenge sealant, in order to keep enough pressure as they absorb a lot of it
Iām not a super DY guy, so a vulcanized tyre could be more āeasierā otherwise I strongly suggest to try them out
They sound super fast, not sure Iām willing to commit to them for unbound though. Few reviews out there that scare me. Maybe Iāll pick a set up and try them for local races
I could do the gateway pro. But they rate out about the same as the pathfinder 42, I think the 47mm pathfinder would cost some weight but be a better tire for unbound.
For me since Iām not at the pointy end of the race or even racing the sun the 47s are great. The volume provides some nice comfort which is most important for me.
Iām interested to see how they mount up.
Iāll prob throw them on early may. I know they are durable but I donāt want to log to many miles on them
Comfort is key on 200 miles
I see your point, but so far I cannot complain about issues regarding the more puncture prone side walls as being in cottonā¦but I have just done around ~900kms on them so maybe not enough to give a full picture
James at EC reviewed the Getaways HD and he rated them, clearly they are heavier and roll slower
It all depends in what at the end you are looking forā¦
When they are worn out, I think Iāll try the Terra Speed or the RS
You could consider using inserts with the Getways so in case you could reach an aid station and for such long events a more supple tyre would definitely help to reduce fatigue
I run inserts on my gravel wheels, being 195 lbs i donāt want to chance an impact failure.
I like the Terra speed more than any other tire I have ran. They do measure narrow.
