Ramp Test "Blind"

I did a ramp test today and I think the text is not great in keeping motivation up. I don’t remember specific examples but things like: this is hurting you, are you still going, you should last to 115% FTP etc. I think this had the effect of me setting my expectations lower than they might have otherwise been.

I have I believe a bit of a mental thing at 20 minutes. This last test, I made it to 20:20 seconds, but I think I have a fear of seeing my FTP rise too fast, so I cut it short not long after knowing my FTP will be going up rather than down. I’m okay with 2-3 watt increases, but obviously would like to see bigger improvements.

After 6mos I turned off the text. It distracts from watching TV, or else I miss half of the sentence, or, it doesn’t go fast enough when I am saying attention. It was pretty novel l at first, so I went with it. But at some point you already know what coach Chad wants you to do anyway… Relax your shoulders, focus on breathing, foot drills, cadence games and standing practice.

For those who want to know when and by how much they improve by “hanging in there”:

SPOILER ALERT for those who don’t want to know :see_no_evil:

After 19min35s you break even, and then gain 1 Watt FTP every 5 seconds .

  • That is only true for a particular starting FTP. The steps are scaled at 6% of FTP for each one.
  • So the delta of watts per time will be different depending on the starting FTP. It is not a fixed wattage as suggested.

Correct, I based it on my personal experience (FTP 270)
Thx for setting it straight.

I’m actually looking forward to having the “Live FTP” field on the iPhone app. Gonna be awesome to see the difference pretty much every pedal stroke makes at the end.
