Step 1 complete….in for the Black course!!!
Still waiting in the PCR results….but already had 2 negative rapid tests, so I like my chances there.
We had 3 teams apply and we all got in….so we are gonna have 12 heading to SBT. Can’t wait!!

In for Red
… and he’s in! Man, I was starting to sweat there
I am in for blue, i better start training
1 month away… I’ll probably step down my registration from Black to Blue today since I have not been able to put in the training I had hoped due to work and family commitments. I think in the past you could make that call on course during the event but I’m not sure that works this year. Still looking forward to the event though.
I’m excited. Getting to town earlier this year to be able to do some shakeout/party rides.
This is only my second year of riding/doing races but SBT was by far the most amazing event I’ve done.
Anyone have any tire advice? I’m planning on 700x38 Pathfinder Pro’s…but open to other other recommendations.
Considered Rene Herse Bon Jon Pass, but based on some research, wanted a little more bite.
Hubs is running Pathfinder Pros 38 again this year. I have Vittoria Torreno Dry tnt 38s.
Rode those last year. Same this time.
Will I regret running those in a 42 if that’s what I already have or is it worth trying to find something a little narrower?
No - I’d run 42 pathfinders if I already had them on my bike (FWIW, 42 pathfinders will be my next tire).
The gravel conditions can vary from month to month, depending on when they last grade certain sections. Last year was smoother than normal gravel. 38s we’re great. If I knew there was going to be more rough sections this year (I don’t know one way or another) I’d ride 42s.
The pathfinders are a particularly good tire (IMO) for SBT, as they have a smooth center tread which rolls fast on the road sections. While also having file tread on the edges for some additional grip when turning.
I’m also arriving the 4th or 5th for acclimation and riding. I may do some pre-rides on part of the course or look for group rides. I know there is a SBT Sat ride some days from Moots.
Those are perfect tires for course I think. I’m running Pirelli Cinturato H 40 (measure 42) because that is what I have mounted and they are also a “fast” tire with some grip. I ran them earlier this year at Gravel Locos and they were perfect. I have a set of Pathfinder Pros in reserve just in case…
I ran Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x38 last year for the Blue course and had no complaints.
Hi team! I have some silly questions as SBT will be my first race ever (I am doing the black course) and it will be a long day
some do, some don’t…dunno for sure about SBT. Just e-mail them and they’ll confirm or not. If you need to carry it, look for the small stick applicators that are easy to stash in a jersey pocket.
Yes, I’ll do small ziploc bags individually measured out if I want to bring my own drink nutrition.
you guys just need to have an honest discussion beforehand. If you are both planning on “racing” it, it should be understood that you Amy not stay together. If it is supposed to be an event that you guys do together as friends, then you should probably stick together. Just get the expectations set ahead of race day
Good luck…see you out there!
Honey Stinger has three varieties of Rapid Hydration Mix - Prepare, Perform and Recover. One might assume the on course selection would be the Perform version which has 14 carbs per serving. I always wonder though - you never know if the volunteer mixing the solution mixed it according to the right proportions.
Personally I will carry some Skratch packets with me (my go to hydration) as well as extra electrolytes (I need more than what the Rapid Hydration Mix has). I will also carry a few of my preferred gels (SIS and Never Second). I have used and like Honey Stinger gels and chews so I know I can use the on course nutrition without issue but will supplement with some of my own.
I also normally carry a small tube of suncreen and chapstick in my frame bag. Weight is nothing but nice when you need it.
BTW - the 2022 Rider Guide has dropped and is available.
Didn’t see sunscreen at the two stations I hit last year. I carry a small stick (kinda looks like solid deodorant) + SPF chapstick.
I carry my hydration in little ziplock bags to dump and mix into water at refills.
I ride my own race, he rides his. I’m the concrete-block-attached-to-his-ankle of the relationship Tell your friend that you’ll be waiting at the finish line with a beer/bevvy of choice for him.
SBT WTHR watch has started!
Right now it’s a high of 78, partly cloudy with some maybe rain in the afternoon but hopefully I’ll be done by 1pm and drinking a beer with my buddy Valtteri
I went for a short ride today from Clark around the lake. I wanted to see that climb. as climbing is NOT my strength. It will be important for me to conserve energy in the first 25 miles - some of which is proper rough gravel, rolling hills with short punchy climbs. Only my second day at altitude so not acclimated at all.
Temps were way cooler than what I am used to in TX but it feels hot at altitude. At least the humidity is waaay lower than home. Forecast is calling for a decent chance of rain next weekend but that is likely to be afternoon thunderstorms.
