Sea Otter Classic 2024 (Schedule)

Event timing is the standard.

I am not sure how well I would have done if I had started mid-pack in the correct age group. A lot of people passed me on descents :frowning:

There has always been race photosā€¦usually takes them a few days to get them posted. There is usually a link on the results page.

Just curious, for people who know the area, how did you find the course conditions on race day?

As a Sea Otter and California newbie, my sense was they were about as good as you could get. Curious if that was actually the case.

I have about 25 laps on the Fuego XL course over the last year, and Iā€™d say that race day was about as good as it gets. In the winter parts of the trail, like Couch Canyon, are quite muddy and slippery in the ruts. Itā€™s not a lot of fun sliding around uncontrollably between the rut edges. In the summer parts of the trail really dry out and there are more sand-traps that suck your power, or make it hard to keep a line. At those times of year I found a big ebike much more satisfying than an XC bike.

April seems to be the sweet-spot, and this year worked out particularly well with the course drying out during the week before the race. There was also some trail repairs in the couple of weeks before the race to fix a couple of spots that had eroded pretty badly.

In general the Fort Ord trails are great year round, even after heavy rains in the winter because the sand mostly drains pretty well, there are just a few trails to avoid depending on the conditions.

Anyone have a link to race photos/ action shots of us the amatures?

At running races there are usually photographers taking photos that you can buy later. Doesnā€™t seem like that is a thing hereā€¦ maybe a business opportunity for the future?!?

I saw a couple photographers out on the course but have had no luck finding them on the internet.
