Strava API Agreement Update

@Pbase I have a document I keep of my connections between services for data exchange and opted to eliminate Strava (and TrainingPeaks) as much as possible but they’re still present for a few cases. Sigh.

well one case where I would have been happy that Strava does not auto share… but it could be switched off/ marked private. I was a close witness to a car cyclist collision that left my fellow cyclist paralyzed. During the court hearing I was blind sided when the defense pulled up my Strava for the ride. Fortunately I had recorded it on a computer but also a watch and could show there were timing/ clock issues between the two but had that not been the case it could have been a bad situation. It would be fine if Strava had a switch to allow certain sharing but as noted above there are workarounds for sure. So I am not against locking with the option to open, but that may not be what they are saying.

Are you thinking this will allow for improved two way data transfers between TR and other services which would negate the need for Strava as a data hub? That has far reaching implications for Strava with many users likely to finally cut the cord.

I have no idea, just seemed interesting reading it with new eyes today.

  • My hope would be dual direction for some of the sync options that are pull only now (like my Wahoo & Zwift), so I can wave goodbye to Strava. But I don’t know anything special here one way or the other.

If some of you feel inclined to +1 this. :slightly_smiling_face:

I never checked (because I relied on Strava) but does the current Wahoo-TR integration only push workouts to Wahoo, not sync activities back to TR?

Correct, AFAIK.

As opposed to these others that are 2-way.

The underlying functionality on the Wahoo side does exist so TR could implement getting the activities pushed to them, just to note.

The thing that really grinds my gears about stuff like this is it’s MY data, and unless I direct record into the Strava app (which I never have) it all get recorded in either Garmin or Zwift first anyway. If every company does this, then Strava gets cut out of the industry pretty quickly. Seems pretty short sighted if they want to go into a data war against other industry giants imo.

Strava is a convenient hub because it allows me to dual record TR and Zwift without creating duplicate entries, and it helps me feel connected to riding buddies who I don’t get to see often, but it’s not irreplaceable. They should tread lightly.

Its going to hurt Strava more than anyone else.
Many have already binned off Strava to intervals. Garmin to intervals myself.

Why keep it, if others cant analyse and use the data. Many only upload for the convenience, that it shares everywhere. Might no longer be a use case (main use case for many is a central repository.)

Think thats pretty much the same as my thoughts

Who needs other services now that Strava has mastered Artificial Inteligence coaching? :joy:

I did see a post from VeloViewer about this, looks like I need to go back and read it…

I tried to see if they had posted anything but couldn’t find anything, please post a link if you find it. I’d imagine they’d be seriously affected, at the very least this probably kills the cool infographic that everyone posts at the end of the year, wouldn’t it?

Apologies but I can’t find it. It may be completely my error and I saw the post about ‘stance on safety’ , they seem to repeat post ( even after I’ve read it). Apologies if I started a wild goose chase!

Interesting if this change is back-dated.

TrainerRoad will have trained its AI model on data at least partially obtained via Strava. Will they now have to purge that data and only use data acquired directly via the app or via Garmin and others?

Interesting that TR have instigated establishing more direct sync links to zwift, potentially bypassing Strava - and they might do the same for wahoo?

What, if any, impact did TrainingPeaks acquiring Indie Velo have on this move by Strava?

Here is a paragraph from the @dcrainmaker article on the TP / indie velo move

“Lastly, I asked how this might impact the relationship TrainingPeaks has with other (every other) online training platform today. They said all existing partnerships remain and that “we very much and firmly believe in an open ecosystem”, going on to talk about how TrainingPeaks as a platform loses value the moment TrainingPeaks starts to limit who can upload to/from the platform.”

I use Strava sauce which displays FTP and weight etc and calculates the number of beers (calories) consumed, as well as other stuff. For some folk I can see that information for them too at the moment. I thought that’d be stuff that that is blocked but its not AI :exploding_head:.

Totally agree. I generally like Strava even though I pay very little attention to the social aspect of it. I don’t have a single follower and occasionally say “huh” while looking at rides from a few pros I follow. For route planning, where I live it’s generally pretty dumb and can’t distinguish between gravel roads, Class IV roads, and mountain bike trails. So if I use it to set a gravel route, things can get very hairy when I just wanted to go out for a mellow ride.

I pay for Premium for two reasons. The first is that I use the segments as consistent, real world performance benchmarks and occasionally getting a high ranking on a particular segment. The other use, and probably more important to me, is that it serves as a very easy to use data hub for a large ecosystem.

If they ditch the data hub as a cash grab while they try to better monetize user’s data, I’ll most likely cancel my Premium sub. I can build custom segments in WKO5 or Garmin or something for benchmarks. Not to mention they don’t actually have a single decent use case for AI or any other data-intensive application that’s in any way useful, let alone better than any of the third parties they’re trying to cut out of the equation.

Waiting for TR’s response before binning Strava. I really only use Strava as a data aggregator now anyway so no big loss. Just means dual recording Rouvy rides if they are done as a standalone ride rather than having the trainer controlled by TR or remembering to export the FIT file afterwards. If Garmin did the same thing then that could become an issue that would require substantial hardware changes.
