Basement is lockable, with a lockbox and key separate from the house (so non-cycling guests won’t be tempted to “explore”), complete with “The Bike Cave” key chain; basement is about 500 sq feet, all dedicated to the bikes (will add beer fridge per recommendations, bistro style table and chairs, bench; dehumidifier runs 24/7 and empties into floor drain, but will add a floor fan to help w/ drying clothes and bikes); have a guy building a wash station with deck just outside the basement
No grease, so far, but I did have to quickly mop up the fat bike tracks into/out of the shower. Forgot to clean the drain. Small details. Having a dog is great. Can blame so much on him.
such as…flatulence?
Lots of lighting. Lots of outlets too. So much now needs to be charged, it’s crazy and only going to get worse. (Like maybe a power strip with lots of outlets) Wifi access for consults?
Some place to dump fluids, dispose of rags/wipes that might not be good for the drain/sewer/septic/trash? I had a brake line fail on a ride and tracked brake fluid into a hotel. (It wasn’t bad at all, just seemed bad) Put it over a pizza box as the last of the fluid drained out. Just in case… (I was sure I could be dinged for that, but no. Whew!)
Oh, maybe a couple throw rugs/mats to put grungy bikes on overnight? Built-in bike supports (like 2x4’s) setup to hold the wheel/bike upright? Should help save on wall damage.
Just thinking of things I’ve run into.
It’s very well lit, will probably upgrade with nicer looking light fixtures in the future; got a multi plug power strip with USB ports. I was considering temporary places for wet/muddy bikes. Having a triathlon style rack for outside (finish ride, rack bike, go inside and pee, come back out); the basement is divided, small ante room leading in, was thinking that might be good place for “mud room” - temporary racks as you describe, w/ tarp on the floor. Great suggestions!! Got me thinking through the whole experience
I was thinking of all the questionable things I’ve done, or heard about, that might help. Along your lines, I was talking to a friend about opening up a ‘biker bar’ here, and we were brainstorming a lot of weird and wondrous things. Wish we could pull it off. It would be a REAL biker bar!
Last fall, I spent 44 consecutive nights away from home for work and brought a bike. I did more than one bathtub wash of my bicycle. I showered and cleaned the shower before I let housekeeping back in so I didn’t have to explain that to anyone.
Pics look good, Austin.
May have to get a sign for the basement: “The Veloway Chalet Biker Bar”
Looks nice!
thinking this would make a brilliant beer fridge:
Thanks to the suggestions, I have added a bike wash station and an outdoor bike rack (finish your ride, hang it triathlon style, change and come back out to clean)
The final results of The Bike Cave. Thanks for all the suggestions. Special thanks to PusherMan for the artwork!
My pleasure
This location and the accommodation both look absolutely amazing.
