The Ironman Training 2021 Thread

Thanks! At this point relaxing about my race means obsessively thinking about what should and should not be in my special needs bags, right?

Cheater shoes LOL

That is what my training partner calls them, but she does wear them.

This is my first pair of cheater fly knockoffs.
will see how it goes.

I have a pair of the Pros (carbon plate) and a pair of the Speeds (nylon plate) love them both. The first time I raced int the Speeds without trying I came within 20 seconds of Half Marathon PR, it was poor math skillls that prevented the PR.

Even though she calls them cheater shoes she wont race without them.

See, even tho I love that story, it feels like it should not be that way…

But @120 was a good price. Comparable to what I have paid for Adios in the past and some other non cheater style shoes in the past.

As much as I don’t want to be a grumpy old man, one thing that sort of grinds my gears about shoes going the more ‘maximalist’ approach is that they seem to have gotten significantly more expensive at all price points, at least in my area.
If they want to have super-technical shoes for race day and rich people that’s fine, but it seems to be getting harder and harder to find a pair of decent all-round training shoes at a reasonable price because everything seems to be increasingly geared towards either marathon-esque stability shoes or outright super shoes. Had a couple of models I liked that were cheaper and went on sale pretty often, but they’ve since come out with the next iteration that has 87% more proprietary foam, double the price tag, and half the lifespan.

Can’t there be one cheap sport?

I have a pair of the 4% that still have a few km in them, got them on discount.

But I run in standard shoes Nike Structure and Nike Milers. I might buy a “special pair” as a reward if I hit my running goals next year I suppose, but I wont use them to achieve them.

I got a pair to race in next year too! The mutant color way - for speed sessions (LOL) and my running races

wore them around the house the other day singing ode to Chris Farley “big guy - little race shoes”.

In week two of 3-2-1 running - so far so good - need to build some durable legs again. I also got a pair of the Endorphin Shifts to replace my Hoka Cliftons 7s as the daily trainer.

Felt like that on Tuesday. Crammed in a bike at 4:30 and was at the pool at 6 for 4500 yds.

Got out feeling dizzy and had no patience to go home and heat up dinner. Off to Chipotle

I like all the technical work in your workout

The tittle of the session was “Strength Swim”. And I could feel it. My arms were bricks after it.
It was a very productive wo for sure.
I like it while i was i the water…
Not so much when I was out of it…

I think there’s a big swim block on my radar too, one way or another. Hopefully on the warm half of the world where I can finally swim with some other people and get some in-person feedback, but if not I like to lean on the swim a bit during the winter as my run/bike volume tends to go down a fair bit. 100’s are starting to squeak in under 1:35 which is getting somewhere for me at least!

Also just got talked into transferring my Cairns entry to the full distance, so now that’s official KQ attempt v1. :scream:

This post made m feel better, I’m not the only one not sure  in she-horning a 70.3 in.

How much are you still biking and swimming during the run focused season?

I’m doing 2 bike sessions and 2 swim sessions. Running 4 to 5 sessions a week. If for some reason I need to skip a session, I give priority to the runs.

@JoeX please tag me when the 2022 thread opens.

After almost 2 years out, just riding bikes, I’m making a return to triathlon next year. “Pre-season” kicks off on 29 November, and I have three 70.3 events on the calendar for 2022.
