Curious for y’all’s thoughts, but the biggest change seems to be that they’re banning putting a bottle down your jersey, which I have mixed feelings about. I could see banning something that exists solely for the aero benefit, but putting a bottle down your jersey doesn’t seem that different than putting it in a jersey pocket, even if there’s an aero benefit to it (similar to how aero bottles or hydration systems are fine, but fairings are not).

Zipper rule - seems better - the DQ for unzipped seemed way to harsh.

Trash rule - I think this now includes the careless language? seems fair. Though I wonder the interpretation on the behind the seat bottle launchers? Is that careless? Every major bump/railroad track at every IM I have been at is littered with stuff (bottles, wrappers, tubes). I think if your bottle launched they just ignored it before as not intentional.

Bike Fairings - Yeah, I don’t mind innovation and pushing the edge, but some off the homemade fairings with duct tape or plastic sheeting were a bit sketchy. I suspect, but would look for clarification that this specifically “added or blended” meaning these are generally homemade add on’s.

Body fairing - yes ban them. Its silly, the chest bottle is the gateway drug. Its only a matter of time before someone shows up with molded space filler insert that shoves into their jersey that interferes with their ability to control their bike, but made them 1 watt faster.

Recumbent bikes - is this opening them up to regular laid back tricycle leg pedaled recumbents (assuming HC division)? versus just the different style handcycles? I think this is good.

Mirrors for handcycles helmets - no opinion, but were they banded in comp for regular bikes (were they?) due to Kevin Moats, or was that everyone’s wish for ever and ever?

I did it in IM Frankfurt last year…because I didn’t have a bottle holder (!) and it wouldn’t fit in a tri jersey pocket. I pretended I was copying Joe Skipper et al

I dunno if there is a significant aero advantage, but it was nice while the fluid was cold

Thanks for pointing out it’s a penalty now. :+1:

Hmm.

How are supposed to vent our frustration at cheats if not with harsh language? Nuke IM Barcelona from orbit?

Ha ha - warm Gatorade is trash, why can’t they put it in ice for a bit - trash! Riding on the highway is trash.

I won’t restrict your language, or your opinion on IM Barcelona, but be careful where you put your gel wrappers, only put them in the trash!

Can I still put duct tape over disc wheel hole near valve?

Likely not going to run you afoul of the rules.

The updated rules seem to be saying it can’t be done for aero advantages, pretty it has been tested that covering the hole makes no difference.

The equipment rules also still allow for a fully covered wheel, you are just enclosing a service port of that full covered wheel.

I usually send up sticking some of the extra number stickers they provide as my disc cover hole sticker, Just tell them you were confused about where to put the stickers

What would possibly be a violation (under old and new rules) but I am not changing is I have changed my cable routing to enter through the top tube on my bike not the downtube, so my downtube has 2 unused internal routing holes that I have covered with electrical tape to keep sweat and road grim from entering the frame. That would likely be more of a violation than covering your disc port hole.

First major milestone checked off on the way to Ironman Maryland.

Shamrock Half Marathon Virginia Beach. Main goal was to hold a pace of 1 minute faster than goal pace for the 26.2 run mile at Maryland. And for the second time this year I beat a friend (20+ Bostons, 4 IMWC) I have been chasing for 15 years.

Great question. I’d use a black sticker or tape to be safe

Anyone know of any update on the USAT rules that parallel these? I want to us a small bladder with a straw for ease of drinking on a local race coming up in two weeks.

Any info on latest USAT rules would be appreciated!

I am buying a new bike today!!!
So exited!

I hope it comes with a USB-C port so I can charge my phone while I stream my race on Instagram #influencer

Thanks for the call.

I never got around to responding to February.

Which was good.

February.

62 hours in a shorter month and a Half Marathon PR.

Started to lose the will to swim :man_swimming: and performance dropped off. Had been progressing but a platto made it hard to continue the commitment.

Last 5 days picked up a bug… that carried over into March… I’ll recap that in a few days.

Good month overall.

Very good and solid month of training. Highlights

  1. New swim coach, cut 13 seconds off of 400 Swim Power 6 off of 200
  2. Shamrock Half Marathon, 1:37, pace of 7:24 at 10k and overall good for 4th age group, top three are stricltly runners
  3. Successful nutrition testing and gut training. On seperate longish rides I used Precision Hydration Gels and Carb only drink at a 90 Grams of Carbs per hour. Easy to digest, good taste, and unlike Infinit not overly sweet.

Thanks @gesteves for the reminder. March was a somewhat light month for me because I was traveling with the family during the kids’ spring break. I did one 8k race @ 30:55, which put me in 13th place in my AG (of 650). Here are my weekly averages:

S: 7,600 yds
B: 5 hours (all indoors)
R: 32 miles
Strength: 40 minutes
Total: 12 hrs, 5 minutes

I need to put in more time in the pool and on the bike to be ready for Des Moines in 10 weeks.

No race planned this year yet but my bike focus for Q1 has gone well so far, HV Gen Build, Sustained Power and just starting Rolling Road Race. Compliance about 80% maybe more. FTP steadily climbing, no injuries. Swim using Form ‘Step Up Your Pace’ wasn’t inspiring but has worked me down to a PB 1:27 100m LCM, now doing a technique block ‘Improve your Form Score’.

Life is sooo much easier when I only run once a week, but it’s time to start working back up to three a week.

Really long quality sessions in HV are a total drag to plan and get started, I should’ve shortened them to 1hr but I never got around to it.

Looking forward to starting Olympic build in about 7 weeks.

March was a good month. Found out after CIM in December that I had a partially torn LCL. Was put in a brace for 6 week, no running. Brace came off mid March, knee feels good, running has resumed! I averaged around 8 hours a week of training, and got back into the pool after 18 months. Cool thing about the pool, I was prepared to be underwhelmed however, my splits have remained about where they were 18 months ago (averaging a 1:38/100). Calling that a win!

This week is the “official” start of training for IMCA in October, and I have my first race next weekend (a local sprint triathlon, “Icebreaker” which I’ve done a couple times before).

The new bike is just about set up, got my new 4iiii power meter installed yesterday. Only thing left is wheels, which probably won’t happen until summer.

I’m feeling REALLY good for the next 6 months of training!

March was a good month for me. I lost a few days due to illness but seem to be fully recovered from that now. Have completed slightly adjusted MV full distance base and have just moved into build.
Last month’s numbers were:
Swim - 5 hours
Bike - 30 hours 40
Run - 8 hours 30.
A event is at the end of July.
Did a local sprint tri at the weekend and won my age group (50-59) which was good for morale.
Swimming is starting to improve. I’m also really pleased with how my run is coming along. FTP has been pretty static but will be interested to see if that improves during build.
