I have a buddy who did it last year (he is briefly visible in the Dave Noakes video above, putting on arm warmers). I’ll get his input…but right now I am planning on the Goodyear Connector Ultimate (40c). Fantastic all-around tire.
Uhhhhhh…

(actually it looks like all the seismic and lava activity is ~180km away form the race site and the Hekla volcano, which is what the race goes around)
So what is the recommended tire for molten lava?

Pulled the trigger on the Aspero…so glad I did.
Everything I wanted (other than a threaded BB) is in the Aspero. Lower BB, more tire clearance, etc.
The geometry is perfect (for me) debated between 54 Nd 56 but pulled ether trigger on the 54 and it is spot-on. Lower BB is immediately noticeable and inspires confidence.
But damn we need rain…big ride today, 112m on gravel. See pic below for how dirty my bike got below.
They are great bikes
Anyone have a thoughts on aero bars?
+possibly some major head wind sections
-possibly to rough to be any use
I’m debating it…agrees there could be some long, tough headwind sections. Seeing the leaders slog through Unbound into that headwind made me rethink using aero bars for The Rift.
One of my buddies is definitely doing it because he has hand pain / numbness on long rides and he wants the additional position.
I would want aero bars
Just more options for you
My biggest issue w/ aero bars is losing access to my tops, which I use a fair amount climbing.
I have a pair of old Scott RCO bars that flip the pads up, but they also rattle like hell when you hit rough stuff.
What seat post is that?
Very nice ride.
Thanks! That is a 25 year-old USE suspension seatpost. I have always run a suspension seatpost on my hard tails or CX bikes since the mid-90’s. No brainer to use one on my gravel bike.
Unfortunately, the seals blew out on my left shifter today……scrambling trying to find a replacement. Found a 1x GRX lever which I ordered, but really wanted a 2x on this bike. I can order a full Ultegra left shifter / brake caliper, but I only need the lever and the combo is. $400.
Not very happy right now……
Welp that sucks and sorry to jinx it.
I have a Warbird and have been eyeing up the Aspero for some time as something a little more nimble for a roadie who like some gravel. Seeing that gives me some ideas.
Good luck getting that straightened out.
That is exactly why I got the Aspero and it has met all my expectations. Highly recommended.
Hi
I haven’t done the course on a bike yet ( I will be there in July), but I’ve driven parts of it and I wouldn’t use aero bars myself.
Welcome to the aspero vs the world discussion.
Thanks for the local knowledge
I guess need to expect 7 degrees and 20 m/s head winds too?
I’m really looking forward to the event, and the chance to finally visit Iceland. What’s everyone running in terms of equipment?
I’ll be on a Cannondale SuperX with 42mm pathfinder pros. I think the 1X gearing will be fine because I’m told everyone hikes the steepest climb regardless of gearing. Has anyone heard otherwise?
I wanted to run a 2x but having clearance issues with the crank on my new Aspero. Am actually stuck w/ a 36t up front, so I’ll have a 1:1.
My buddy said a 1:1 is sufficient….anything steeper than that and you are walking anyway.
