It was a small paved section between gravel roads. Luckily he was probably only going 20mph +/-
That’s pretty much my dream bike. Congrats!
Never mind the bike, are you ok?
Haha I got this one at James Brothers in October 2013. Thankfully, it’s still going strong and doing what I need it to do! Come back and check out the slalom. CAMP is still doing good work out there!
Nice. What prompted the switch from the Tarmac SL7 to an Ultimate
Honestly, classic frame design, colors and new Ultegra for a great price. And a good deal for my Tarmac.
Is that the Sackville Street building at UMIST!
Giving me flashbacks
Unless you’re already a professional frame painter, you might well be in the wrong job.
I’d buy a frame painted like that, in a heartbeat.
It’s indeed, iconic building
Do you notice a difference in ride quality or feel? I have a SL6 and want a SL7, but might wait for the 8, in a year or two…if money allows.
Nice! That’s an impressive DIY bike. The painting looks professionally done.
Both SL7 and Ultimate are fantastic bikes, both feel really comfortable. I did a 600 km in 24 hours on Tarmac SL7 and never thought about having discomfort. Ultimate feels maybe even better but that might be due to different stack/reach ratio.
So as things have been updated, why not reply to myself
First the tragedy:
Then the outcome:
The future is bright with this one, love that frame.
You know you can’t just show us that picture without giving us the downlow on how that frame snapped in half like that
It just broke on regular ride. I think I might have damaged it moments prior to it breaking, I heard a loud ping, but I passed it off as a rock impact on the downtube (plenty of those in that trail). A minute later it broke on a small drop.
Other than that, I actually think it was metal fatigue. It had around 8 years of almost daily use, mostly XC type riding but some occasional DH races with small jumps that I cased all the time.
It never occurred to me that I might have been abusive enough of a rider to break an entry level frame so I never checked it for cracks, but perhaps I am.
It was also converted from a straight steerer to a tapered steerer and maybe those extra centimeters from the external cup increased the stress.
Thankfully I was just a bit bruised from the crash. The frame is now hanging on my wall, it had quite the life.
