Thanks. I do actually have an adapter already but for some reason had ruled that out. Can’t for the life of me remember why so i shall try it tonight!
the bigger issue for me, no matter what I tried, is that once every week or two, Zwift would randomly take control of the trainer. That was a buzz kill, because there is nothing worse than thinking TR is in control of Erg mode and then poof, out of nowhere Zwift would start fighting for control. So I just cut my losses, canceled Zwift subscription, and started using the time to watch all the work related YouTube videos that have been on my to-do list forever.
Yeah, unfortunately… Zwift does a half-good job of storing the devices pairing so it defaults to the proper setup when you launch, and don’t have to do anything.
However, there is some magical trigger (still not sure what) where it will re-seek and find my trainer during startup and load in “Controllable Trainer” without me noticing (since it auto-loads past the Device screen).
If I don’t catch those random instances, I get the confusing behavior as both apps fight for control. It’s an easy fix, but annoying that Zwift is not fully consistent when loading.
Its not just when Zwift launches, which I agree is annoying and happens far too often IMHO.
I’m specifically talking about once or twice a month, and I start a TR workout and Zwift is using power meter only. And then poof, during the workout Zwift switches from power meter to controllable trainer and tried to take control. I stop pedaling and tell Zwift to use power meter. Then restart TR workout.
Interesting. I don’t think I have had that particular issue.
Last thing I did was connect TR to Kickr, and Zwift to Stages. Can’t recall if Zwift insisted on connecting to Kickr or not in that scenario, but I can tell you that I (repeatedly) completely uninstalled Zwift including all the hidden config and support files. In any case, I’m happier now killing two birds with one stone - working out with TR while watching conference sessions to stay on top of things in my segment of the tech industry.
Success with the MacBook Pro! Embarrassingly simple. Thanks for the suggestion! Looking forward to more TrainerRoadZwifts
Excellent! Happy you are running well now
2 ant dongles in one PC does work. Just have TR control your trainer and follow along on Zwift.
Yup, covered in the link I shared above.
I may give it a shot. I’ve actually got 3 ANT+ Dongles (we run 2 smart trainers setup side by side) but I’ve just used my iPad for TR and my PC for Zwift up until now. My girlfriend is doing it the other way around but her Tacx Flux LOVES to drop the ANT+ signal (which is why I have an extra dongle) and her TR workout loses power for a few seconds before coming back.
Cool thread thanks!
But what am I missing?
My set-up is as follows;
- Kinetic Road Machine (Bluetooth)
- Garmin Speed and Cadence sensor (Ant+)
- Wahoo Tickr Heart Rate Monitor (Bluetooth)
- Ant+ dongle
- Macbook
- iPhone
Why can I not get Zwift and TR to work at the same time? I can get them all connected either in Zwift (all working fine) or in Trainer Road (all working fine), but not at the same time…
1st prize will be to have TR on the iPhone and Zwift on the Macbook…
Might help to know the precise order and pairing method(s) you have already tried.
But here goes:
-
Make sure all cycling devices are awake.
-
Launch TR on the phone.
-
Go to Devices menu and pair:
- Road Machine BLE (should give you Power and maybe Cadence?)
- Tickr BLE (HR)
-
Launch Zwift on the Mac.
-
In the Devices menu, pair:
- Garmin Speed and Cadence ANT+ (you need to use Zpower and select Kinetic Road Machine)
- Tickr ANT+ (I know you said it was BLE, but I think it will be dual)
And see what happens.
I think this is where I am going wrong, I did not know about Zpower, I will give it a go tonight and report back!
Thanks!
Yeah, if you pair the Road Machine in TR, it won’t be available in Z (because BLE can only pair to one app at a time).
I did this and I can see everything in Zwift and TR at the same time, so no pairing issues as fas as I can tell… BUT, when I pedal everything in TR works fine, but in Zwift, my little man just stays in one place, the watts are zero but the cadence is changing as I pedal…
Please take and share a picture of your Device pairing screen in Zwift.
Hi Chad,
So here goes:
- Paired Road Machine and HR in Trainer Road App on iPhone and make sure they work fine
Then in Zwift on the Mac , connected HRMonitor, Speed / Cadence Sensor and Road Machine via Ant+ (I disconnected the Mac’s Bluetooth)
Made sure they show up:
Then the settings screen set to Zpower…
BUT, cycling in Zwift, I can see cadence and Heart Rate, but Watts are at zero and my avatar is not moving at all
What if you unpair the speed sensor in Zwift and then pair power?
