TrainingPeaks Virtual - [formerly, "Should TrainerRoad link up with IndieVelo"]

After you set up your profile the way you want, (menu - Activity - Create New) you can go into that profile, bring up Sensors from the menu, select trainer control and disable. I may be wrong but I think it is specific to the profile and not global disable. I only use my 1040 to record, not control, so I never run into issues.

Must be specific to the 1040. I don’t see that option on the 1030 to control connections within a given profile

There’s also a real possibility I am wrong, and I am globally disabling trainer control for all activity profiles.

Edit: I just checked and I was incorrect. Unfortunately on the 1040, the sensor enable/disable is across all profiles.

I dual record on my 830. I have a PM on my bike, so I have never paired the trainer to the Garmin. Zwift / TPV record power from the trainer but do not control it. TR controls the trainer and records its power. Garmin records power from the PM on the bike. That way I can compare trainer and PM power to ensure they aren’t drifting too far apart. Hope that helps.

I do that too. Rouvy or TP Virtual control the trainer. Garmin records the ride with HRV logging enabled for use by AI Endurance.

The question was about specifying sensors by profile. It appears that is not possible

Hopped on TrainingPeaks Virtual today….was doing a prescribed workout, so can’t comment on pack dynamics, riding with others, etc.

Overall, it was fine. Always strange starting a new platform and you aren’t familiar with all the details. Graphics are OK, but I don’t see them as substantially “better” than Zwift.

It was nice having my TP workout automatically available in TPV….no need to faff about with two devices / programs. Irony was that I still had Zwift going on my iPad as if I was doing a TR workout. I’m too close to 100 to be willing to sacrifice any ride time and not get my XP.

I’ve had this conversation before with other people comparing Zwift to its competitors. It’s a really odd thing to me that one person’s “great graphics” are another person’s “meh”. I think Zwift looks far better than its competitors. Not enough to pay for it when the competition is free, but definitely prefer. Other people will say Zwift looks absolutely terrible and they prefer “X”, which I think looks meh. Not a judgement, just more an observation on how we’re all different. “Different strokes for different folks”.

100%…and I’ll add that “great” graphics really aren’t a factor for me. Both platforms have a “cartoon” feel to them, so which one is “better” is irrelevant. For my use scenario, they are essentially the same.

Very different to playing an actual video game where “meh” graphics could be a deal-breaker.

I know if you hit ‘J’ it’ll a popup will show you to join other riders - but can you leave one pace ride and join another without ending the ride and starting new? I loved the Zwift Companion App for things like this.

You can.

In my opinion, My Whoosh has the best graphics hand down- i do lomger Z2 rides on Whoosh, TPV has the best on screen metrics and once fine tuned a bit will likely be my favorite for training-the atv control have some issues, Zwift is still king as the volume of roads is the biggest, the training controls work well, and has the most races on varied terrain. I bet TPV will my go to in a year.

Yeah, I use the AppleTV Remote on my iPhone and I still can’t get the cursor to go where I want or click on things once I’m on them in TPV. Very frustrating. I literally couldn’t quit my ride yesterday. I’m hopeful they’ll get it resolved soon though since so many people are making noise about it. Don’t have this problem at all when using the same devices with Zwift.

As we’ve discussed before, Zwift’s biggest strength is also its biggest weakness - it has the masses / engagement. People go to Zwift, despite its flaws and shortcoming because they know there will be thousands of people there and lots of events / rides. But that strength is not proprietary……if you can find a way to begin to peel off the masses, you hit them in their Achilles Heel.

So if I am TPV, I’m reaching out to the major groups on Zwift and seeing what I can do to incent them to come over to TPV. If you can get groups like BMTR, DIRT, 3R, etc to defect, you can start the erosion that could turn into a landslide.

Offer them a year free of TPV after March, provide incentives for ride leaders / sweepers (a growing issue on Zwift), and maybe even custom features….anything to make TPV more appealing than staying on Zwift.

If I need to do a long ride this winter, I’m definitely defaulting to Zwift because I know the BMTR rides, the people, etc. I can knock out a solid 4 hour endurance ride there and have hundreds of people to do it with. No way I am doing that on TPV right now…I’d be bored out of my skull.

But if BMTR made the move to TPV, I’d be incentivized to make the switch.

Public service announcement: You can setup TPV to automatically update FTP and weight from TP. If you enter your weight manually, make sure you do it correctly. Took me fifteen minutes to figure out why I was going so slow this morning. Turns out that no amount of human-generated watts will push a 1723 pound avatar anywhere quickly. Guess I missed a decimal this morning!

Anyone experiencing issues with calibrating? I have the OG Zwift Hub and I could not get it up to 22mph without being out of the saddle as the resistance really kicked in around 17 mph. I only have the trainer selected for trainer and cadence. I leave the power meter field blank. Though I should put my powertap p2 pedals back on and use them. It felt like the trainer was being controlled by another program (everything on my phone and pc was closed except for tpv). I gave up after 4 failed attempts. I’ll send it to TrainingPeaks support but thought I’d ask here. I’m sure this trainer can auto calibrate while free riding. So maybe I’ll do that next time before starting a workout.

You’re assuming he ever made it to the top….

Is there a way to exit one ride and join another without TPV saving those as 2 distinct rides? If not, is there a way to just not send the TPV ride to TP at all?

Example - I want to do a 90 min ride in Z2, but I want to warm up for 15 mins at the beginning. I picked a pace ride, rode it, then exited and even though I chose to discard the ride (because I was dual recording on my Garmin), it saved the 15 min ride to TP, which then thought I only did 15 mins of my TP planned 90 min ride.

Without exiting TPV, I started a 2nd pace ride and rode it for the remaining 75 mins. I discarded that one too, but it also saved to TP even though I said to discard it.

So, I ended up with 3 rides in TP (15 min ride from TPV, 75 min ride from TPV, and the 90 min ride I saved on my Garmin). Of course it saved the 15 min ride against the 90 min planned ride in TP, so the analysis is messed up.

I’d like to either save the whole TPV ride as one, or have them both not go to TP, so that my Garmin ride is the one measured against my planned goal.

Any ideas before I write TP support?

For today’s ride, I used the ATV remote (not the iPhone one) and it worked flawlessly. I had a bunch of problems with it last week, so I’m super happy!

You can switch pacers without ending the ride. And you can also use pacers in a structured workout (even in ERG.) When I do sweet spot I pick a pacer at the right power and when I have a 3 min recovery I fall off the back. When the recovery is over, I just rejoin the pacer.
