TrainingPeaks Virtual - [formerly, "Should TrainerRoad link up with IndieVelo"]

I used it for the first time yesterday also. I might see if I can link it up with TR like I used to with RGT. Having TR control the trainer only but having both read off the Power Meter. Set up like this Using Entertainment with TrainerRoad – TrainerRoad

I don’t have TR, and I used rollers, so no ERG, or smart trainer. So I can’t tell about this, but I saw a option on the power settings, very clever by the way, that you can choose between 5 ways. Match terrain, outside souce (TR), etc.

It should work fine.

They do tend to have a lot of bots but that doesn’t bother me

Me neither. I was doing a basic SST 3x10 to close the week and as I have to do it inside I decided to have a go. Surprisingly good to be honest. Zwift might not see my money soon.

I saw that George had a post on linkedin announcing it was rapidly approaching 30,000 users.

I’m torn. If I’m just doing a typical TR interval work I just use the TR app. If I’m doing less structured stuff I can use Zwift or indievelo. As always Zwift has the huge number of races/group rides at any one. Indievelo keeps adding more stuff though

Yep, that’s the main reason. A group ride, race, etc.

Have to use IndieVelo a bit more to have a better picture, but first impression was good. I really liked the dynamics, the “game” seems more real, IDK. And one thing I don’t like zwift is the gamification, it’s too many power ups, which I personally find nonsense, and tron bikes, and colors, etc.

My impression of indievelo is good. I don’t care about the gamification in Zwift.

In Zwift, I’ve just made use of some 40-60 mile endurance group rides on weekends when I’m stuck indoors and its useful beinf able to chase people.

Just FYI for anyone, the ‘E’ keyboard button is great for quickly switching between ERG/Level/Grade depending on your interval in a workout.

TrainingPeaks acquires IndieVelo.

Could be an interesting development…or it could be Wahoo / Sufferfest 2.0.

Well that’s certainly unexpected. Not sure how I feel about TrainingPeaks getting into that area, though a good way to further increase Premium subscriptions for themselves.

Great timing with the seasons changing and lots of us moving more indoors

I don’t want to be Debbie Downer, but I don’t get it. I’ve used TP in its paid form for a bit and it is the polar opposite. Their software and web interface seem or pre-original iPhone vintage, a bit like SAP in business: it gets the job done™. The functionality is still good, albeit clunky, but it is serious. IndieVelo … doesn’t seem compatible with TP’s target demographic at all.

@OreoCookie Oof SAP. That’s harsh.

I had to use SAP for a while to log my billable hours. It’s not great.

George Gilbert should be very able to help TP modernise its UI. Given what he has done - pretty much single handed AIUI - with IndieVelo, I would say he is a useful person to have around. I hope this transaction got him a good pay day.

What, if anything, will Zwift / MyWhoosh do next? Do they regard this as a significant enough tie up to do something?

What about TR? I can’t help wondering if TR / Zwift are talking about more than just linking up through the API…

Wasnt “Wahoo/RGT” “Wahoo/Sufferfest 2.0”… this would be “Wahoo/Sufferfest 3.0”

The one thing TrainingPeaks has been missing is an app to control the trainer and actually ride the workouts. I use TP with my coach, but still use TR to control the trainer. Mainly because my Garmin sucks at trainer control even though it’s a Garmin trainer too, but that’s a different story.

I think for a segment of users, incorporating TR Premium plus a way to actually execute the workouts on the trainer would be a good thing. Guessing this is part of it…

I agree with a lot of the above sentiments. If this is well executed, big if, this could make TrainingPeaks a serious contender to TR / MyWhoosh / Join / etc. As TrainingPeaks would have both the library of training plans from coaches covering everything, and a way to execute indoor cycling workouts, which would enhance the value of the premium subscription.

Interesting times indeed

As an existing Premium member on TP, having IndieVelo as am alternative platform to Zwift could be of interest to me. But a lot will depend on how many users they have on their platform. I have zero interest in riding around a digital world by myself.

Now, if TR offers workout integration into Zwift, that eliminates any platform curiosity on my side. But it doesn’t seem like that is happening anytime soon.
