Nice setup! I think Class A’s with garages are becoming more popular, and I’ve never seen a side garage model before like yours. Newmar recently came out with a new one that is a front diesel so that the rear has space for a traditional rear garage door.
Earlier this year we went from a travel trailer / diesel truck to a 38’ Super C, Renegade brand, towing a Jeep Wrangler. Crazy amount of outside storage compared to the trailer. We keep two bikes in the Jeep so that they stay protected, and sometimes carry one on a bike rack on the rear of the Jeep or the bunk area in side the RV. It’s been a nice way to travel with all of our toys.
You got a great deal on your RV. We bought ours new, so our cost was multiples of yours. Really enjoying it so far. We did have to get an upgraded driver’s license because of the cargo capacity of our Super C. Pretty funny bringing our RV to the local DPS for a driving test.
I looked extensively at those Renegade Super C’s. Love them. Good to know about the licensing. Wonder if that applies to Newmar’s new Super C line too…
In 10+ yrs if we ever depart from our current rig, I’ll probably go the route of Super C, and I hope the toyhauler line of Super C’s expands beyond Renegade. Newmar is in perfect position to make that happen.
We’ll it’s taking a lot of time, but it’s finally coming together. No rush now anyway, given we missed the camping season this year.
Ford Transit base van.
With pop top, so sleeping for four.
2” lift being added.
Adding a cargo slider the full width/length of the cargo area - so bikes and gear can be accessible.
With fork mounts in the cargo area, will be able to carry 4 bikes.
I’ll share pics once we get the van fully built. I cautiously optimistic it will turn out the way I have envisioned it, but I’m sure there’ll be some things that don’t quite turn out the way I was hoping.
Excited to be joining this thread… picking up my brand new california at the weekend… new to van life and campervans in general so will need to lean on you guys for all the advice
Super interesting to see what you’ve changed to make it fit better.
(Also don’t know why but I always pictured you in my head as a grey haired old guy. )
Guess the combination of Dr and living in an RV
lol!! Why thank you. I can see how you’d think that! I’ve got a few grays for sure, but at age 34, (wife, age 33), we’re usually the youngest full-time RVers for hundreds of miles in every direction.
Slightly less glamorous than true vanlife, but will allow for fun bike adventures in the mountains and make finding accommodations at races a lot simpler so figured I’d post!
I am currently in the process of building a custom wedge style rooftop tent for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ. Designed and built myself from T slot aluminum extrusions, with alucore panels for the roof and floor. Sized to perfectly fit a 3in thick full XL mattress (80”x54”) which I have found to be very comfortable. All that’s left is sewing the tent canvas! Have crossbars on top, and the gas struts are rated to 90lbs each, so will be able to fit bikes and other fun things on the roof even when tent is open.
This looks super cool. How long did it take you to build it out and how much did you do vs. having a shop do it for you?
Especially curious about the roof tent, how expensive/complex was it to get that done and any recommendations on companies for those?
