I’m mostly familiar with MTB wheelsets since I ride MTB like 95% of the time, but while not US but Canada (so N. America still), WeAreOne wheels are cheaper with Hydra hubs and have a comparable warranty. Similarly, Berd’s HAWK wheelsets (the rims are made by WAO) are made in N. America, Hydra hubs, lifetime warranty, and a couple hundred dollars cheaper than comparable ENVEs (though more expensive than WAO’s own wheelsets).
HED made in Minnesota. Leaders in the space of aero profiles and wide wheels are faster.
And if budget is a concern, I9 1/1 hubs are also US made.
I think there are a couple wheel building sites that sell WAO/I9 combos for under $1400 for a set.
The WAO Revolution wheelsets come default now with 1/1 hubs for $1275 direct from WAO.
It doesn’t? The guy sells sealant, and larger tires need more sealant!
Aside from that all this talk about his “altruism” for making tools and podcasts strikes me as a bit odd as these things are his marketing strategy for his brand. He wants his face to be seen as much as possible so people buy stuff from Silca. That’s not altruism.
I was unaware that thinner tires did not need sealant…unless your contention is that Josh has devised an devious marketing plan to push larger tires because users will then put in an extra 1/4 of an ounce in each tire? That is surely a market-changing strategy that will see Silca be the #1 sealant supplier in the category!
I also never used the word “altruism”, nor even implied it, sooooo…
You said “does not have any direct ebenfit [sic].” And while I admit it’s a precarious argument, there is a direct benefit to his bottom line there. He’s just not even close to having no stake in the matter.
I also never used the word “altruism”, nor even implied it, sooooo…
That was in reference to @mcneese.chad’s comment.
Hard to see this as a relevant bias in my eyes:
Or maybe that 1oz increase (2x for 2 tires = evil?) from the terrible -30mm tire to +30mm is their secret to ripping off tubeless tire consumers
I don’t think he’s telling people to buy larger tires to sell more sealant. But suggesting he doesn’t benefit from telling people to buy the larger tires is untrue, even if it’s marginal.
Then I welcome the “unpopular” label to my opinion above
It is a 50% increase in sales if he convinced everyone to move over to 30+mm tyres. Not nothing
He also sells pumps. Larger tires need more air volume = more pump strokes = pumps wear out sooner = $$$
The dude is an evil genius
Now I’m worried that if Josh and Jan have their way there will be so much air in bike tyres that there won’t be enough left for us to breathe
Next year: “high pressures are back in style!”
I’m not interested in dealing with the brake fluid. Especially since it’s not something I need done on any frequent basis.
I think this big tyre conspiracy has all the making of a Netflix documentary.
On the subject of wide tyres, my unpopular opinion is that hookless wheels are good for cyclists and not just about manufacturers’ bottom line.
We get lighter, stronger and cheaper wheels out of it, too.
@Power13, note that I’m only using your post as a reference so people will understand what issue I’m talking about, rather than “responding” to you or criticizing you in particular. I’m not talking about you, or Josh, or Jan, or anyone in particular, I’m talking about society in general, and I appreciate you sticking up for Josh.
So pardon me while I pull out my soapbox…
Y’all might be shocked to think of this, but there also exists such a thing as an honest person. There are many cases where people set up a company to sell something, and advocate strongly for it, because they truly believe it’s better or of high value to the buyer. In fact, I’d argue that this is valid for the vast majority of entrepreneurs.
The modern psychosis that everyone is lying, and that benefiting from something is disqualifying, and that one’s statements can only possibly be accepted as valid (and then only maaaaaybe) if one does not benefit in any way, is bullshit of the highest order.
Buying into this prattle is tantamount to allowing the worst scum of society to drag down the standards of conduct, ethics, and integrity of everyone to their level. When you allow the scum to convince you that “everyone is like that”, the scumbags win and ALL OF US lose. And they who swallow that line of crap are the greater fools.
Yes, there are scumbags who lie and cheat and deceive. And yes, there are honest folk out there who advocate in the hope of serving others and adding value. Learn to tell the difference for yourself, damnit.

P.S. If that’s an unpopular opinion, fine, and to hell with anyone who disagrees. Looks like the perfect hill to die on.
I have the same feelings about Hunt.
Not trying to knock Light bicycle at all…I was looking at them as well, and have heard great things.
