Obviously all of these injuries suck, but “hit a dog” wins the prize for the most creative way to break bones! I can totally see it happening though with either dogs running off leash or a hard to see leash.
By sheer coincidence…2 years to the day. First bone I ever broke in my 56 years of life.
I was going down the famous Gibraltar Road, got a flat on the rear tire at exactly at the hairpin turn that we affectionately call “No Shooting”. I lose the back end of the bike, then over compensated by applying my front brakes and going over the handlebars with collarbone crushing into the pavement first. Felt weird, somewhat painful, but not really. Just laid on the ground thinking I was winded. Luckily there was friend descending with me and he saw the whole thing. After a few seconds of being dazed and really not being able to move my arm…hoping I could still descend, my friend told me “no bueno” and called for an Uber to take me home.
Six weeks of being out, which coincidentally is how I found out about TrainerRoad as I purchased a Wahoo Kickr. So I guess good things still came out of that little experience
One dude here hit a dog…now you a cat…careful guys or we’re going to have PETA on our tails soon!
Broken femur and shoulder broken in three places after coming off at 37km/h on ice on Feb 2018. Back on the bike after 11 weeks.

I crashed and dislocated my index finger at the mid point while riding about 6 miles from civilization. Within a split second of realizing what had happen, I popped it back into place, sat for a few seconds and realized that I better haul it back before the adrenaline wore off.
Hit the pavement just as I stopped shaking and my finger stopped wanting to bend.
Took about a year to feel normal again.
2016 - crash at 30+ mph last lap of a crit. Pretty significant concussion with night in the hospital. Really bad vertigo/dizziness for several months and then it would come and go for about 2 years. It was pretty scary, there were certain angles I’d turn my head and the world would just go into a spin. I still don’t feel like my balance is quite right, but that might just be me getting older. Have not raced a crit since. Not ruling it out forever, but crits were never my favorite and I’ve just seen more serious wrecks in crits compared to RR, gravel, MTB (and the wrecks tend to be more out of your control).
Late 2017 - displaced patella fracture. Had a pretty minor stupid wreck on my MTB, but my knee hit a rock just right (wrong) and smashed my kneecap into many, many pieces. Top portion of my kneecap was basically up in my thigh, really freaky looking. Screws and mesh to pull it all back together. The knee still doesn’t look right and it hurts at times, but it’s pretty functional these days. I was back on a stationary trainer about 4 weeks post surgery (partial circles) and was doing D group zwift races a few weeks after that (on an FTP of less than half of pre-wreck levels). Took me ~18 months to get back to pre-accident fitness and my left leg is still noticeably smaller and weaker than my right. Worst part of this story is that I pulled out of my driveway that day and then turned back around to grab my knee pads when I realized that I had forgotten them. Got to the trails with the knee pads and decided I really didn’t need to wear them. It’s become one of my wife’s favorite dumb husband stories. She was always reminding me to wear my pads before this happened.
I’d just begun picking up a lot of speed down a fun little descent, and noticed a patch of gravel on the road at the last second. The gravel patch was on the apex of a corner, and was hidden from view because of the incline and bend in the road. I couldn’t avoid the gravel patch. I lost control of the bike and was headed straight into a rock face on the other side of the road.
I was going too fast to brake in time, so I decided to protect my bike with my body by jerking the bike to the left, landing on my left shoulder. It kind of hurt, but I honestly thought it was a giant bruise until they showed me the x-ray:
This is what got me started on TrainerRoad ![]()
This thread is just a massacre!
but let’s not stop there. Nothing broken but palms messed up on the way to work on some gravel. Always wear gloves now. This looks light compared to you guys though.
I was riding again in 2-3 weeks, but it just took a long time for the finger to not feel strange ![]()
Spiral femuur fracture with extensive communation (shattering) plus an avulsed lesser trochanter.
Stopped for a “natural break” and was chasing at 29 mph to catch back on. Not sure exactly what happened other than pinch flatted my front tire, bike washed out and boom, down I went.
I remember when I hit thinking “wow, that’s going to be a spectacular bruise” (duh)
Tried to stand and my leg twisted in two directions at the same time (ouch).
7 days in the hospital and another 21 in extended care facility.
Doctors couldn’t guarantee I’d ever be able to walk again. Was contemplating handcycle racing, but I worked my butt off in rehab (ouch again) and six years later faster than ever at age 59. Only pain I get is when running, so I don’t do that.
Funny thing, when they were cutting off all my kit, I remember demanding that they not cut my jersey or shoes even though my pain was a 10 (ouch). Shorts were shredded so no loss there.
Posted elsewhere but was clipped by a door mirror (so I’m told) and crashed causing my heart to cardiac arrest, sternum broke by a passing surgeon who restarted my heart, ride and race with an implanted cardiac defibrillator 6 years later.
Was doing a time trial in a group of 3. Someone pulled in front of me but their back wheel was rubbing against mine. I had to lean in towards them to stand upright. They pulled forward but as I was leaning over, I shot over to the other side of the road with a car coming towards me. I pulled back to my side of the road and straight into the person behind. We both went down, his bike and clothes trashed but mine were fine. I did however smash my olecrannon to pieces. This was in 2014 and had to have a plate put in to hold it together. The plate came out a year later but the joint is damaged, I can’t do press-ups for example anymore and it clicks all the time. Thankfully this is my only cycling injury despite a few offs in my time.
Saved the jersey which was the most important thing…so a happy ending to the story! ![]()
Torn ACL, broken jaw, both from BMX, and then serious eye damage getting a flat commuting in the rain
I came off going round a roundabout at 50kph and broke my hip in 2018. It was a bit of road I’d done hundreds of times before, and I felt a bit cocky that morning so smashed it and leant into the corner. Unfortunately it’s off camber and had a big patch of diesel…hit the deck and somehow got out the road before a truck went over me. Tried to stand up, shouted, and knew I’d done some proper damage…5 days later left hospital with a massive titanium Dynamic Hip Screw in my femur and a fear of going round corners at more than 20kph that continues to this day. No crits since. Oh and the accident happened exactly a year after having keyhole surgery on the same hip for FAI. Feels fine now!
No broken bones knocks on convenient piece of wood, lots of road rash and a handful of minor concussions
My most severe cycling injury was a collapsed lung while racing a TT - or at least became apparent during the race, could’ve collapsed in the hours preceding it
When I signed up for TR, I didn’t envision this being my first post. I wanted to post some big FTP gains, but…
Here is my unfortunate addition to this thread. I was on a rather spirited group ride on 06/23/20 and the group came upon a group of construction barrels placed at regular intervals on the road. Somewhere along the way, one of the barrels was out of alignment or “jumped” in my way, causing my left handlebar to hit it and the rest is history. Right shoulder took much of the brunt of the trauma which resulted in acromion in two pieces. It was repaired with some hardware a week later. MRI upcoming to determine if any ligament damage. I’m hoping to be cleared next week for indoor trainer rides. In review of these other broken bones and stories, you guys/gals are tough!
While I’m down about the injury, it was fortunate that no one else went down and that my secondary injuries weren’t too bad. Road rash is minimal and all teeth accounted for.
Concussion and headwound and broken scafoid 2 days in Poole hospital .Swanage triathlon
Torn medial ligament on knee. Mont St Anne world mtb elite and masters champs practice. Did the race 1 legged next day.
Broken wrist Italy MTB training camp
Open fracture on elbow , crashed onto gravel in Scott Marathon to avoid a huge tractor at t juction. Rode the 8 miles to the finish, cleaned it up , then went to the party that night. Wrapped it up in an old towel thinking it was just a bit of road rash, and camped overnight. Drove home and called in at A+E on way to get it cleaned out , and ended up having an op and a antibiotic drip, and a bit of a ticking off from the Triage.
Managed to stay injury free since then apart from the usual skin lacerations and bruises.
Nothing compared to most of the posts on here.
