Morning ride on a camping weekend In Colorado. Today was pushing hard (apart from photo breaks!). Tomorrow will be an easy one with the kiddos.
What I wouldn’t give to experience riding those trails
Another lovely sunny day here in northern England. One of my events for this year is may be going ahead so thought I’d better start getting some longer rides done.
Did a 74km ride with 1500m of climbing. Felt pretty good despite the heat (got sunstroke a couple of years ago so tend to take it steady), cleaned one descent that’s usually got some deep mud holes but today they were dry and rideable. Also cleaned the biggest climb of the day, I normally have to dab/push the bike for a couple of metres right at the top. So pleased with both those.
One novelty. Came across an old post box in one of the small villages. How do I know it’s old? The initials, V.R. = Victoria Regina! (UK post boxes carry the monarch’s initial plus ‘R’ for Rex or Regina). Queen Vic died in 1903 so it’s somewhere in the region of 120yrs old! They usually get replaced following a change of monarch but some either get forgotten or the village asks to keep the one in place.
Finally did the Norwegian metric I’ve been wanting to do for years.
The route is super popular locally, it’s sort of The Bergen Metric and for a while we were seeing more bikes than cars:
Lots of fjords:
and sheep:
and waterfalls, which I lost count of and regretted not stopping for a picture every. single. time.
Nice find!
Oh that’s cool
Fun ride today, perfect weather in the 70s and a 10mph wind from the north made the first leg interesting. Tempo pace with a few segment efforts, 10 top 10s but no crowns for me today. Pic was taken at the northern most point before I headed back
Saturday was 57mi of ±7600’ of climbing, 90% dirt. Good times. A bit of exploring as I took branches off known-to-me trails. There are way-finding signs on the trails, mostly for walkers/hikers but completely usable by us riders, as long as you know where the village or POI pointed to is. In the end, my Garmin 830 said the day was “unproductive.”
Sunday was recovery/slacker/fun day. Enjoyed the views (well, I always do that), stopped for pictures at places not-new to me, stood and chatted with a lady on an e-bike for a while, and then spotted the wife who was meeting friends for a walk in the forest, so I chatted with them for a while. A nice morning. The lady on the e-bike, probably older than me. She had been on her not-e-bike the day before but today was taking it easy (this had a basket attachment, so I’m guesssing this is her commuter bike) but with a camelback she wasn’t taking her hydration with her. A relaxing morning that my Garmin reported as “Productive.” I guess it thought I was doing intervals?
It’s a holiday here today, so out for another ride shortly, this time with a friend which means a “late” start of 9a.
Sunday saw me take part in a very unofficial race league, set up by a group of riding buddies. Basically, a member of the league creates a route in Strava, shares that route and then you have a week to complete it. It’s an ITT when all is said-and-done.
I got hammered
Went out at a fair pace but as 70% of the course was new to me, I didn’t have my usual landmarks to use as mental notes. I just kept the power on and paid for it. Last 30 minutes was hell and I limped home.
Covered some good outside miles last week on a fun little vacation day I took to get out of the house: Relive 'SIP Clean Air 200' .
Nice! What is it like crossing the Benecia-Martinez bridge? Wasn’t the protected bike lane on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge completed last year? Seem to recall seeing something on the news about it.
Crossing Benecia bridge is a nice separated lane - was still dark and was windy - but nice and pretty quick crossing. And yeah the RSRB opened up just like 9 months ago or something - it’s awesome - really great to have a way to connect Marin and the East Bay - I work in the City so been able to do some bike commuting home with it as well… now one day if we could get a bike lane on the west span of the Bay Bridge … would be so awesome.
Sounds like a good excuse for a vacation! Colorado, Utah and maybe a little Arizona (Sedona) if you have time.
My weekend adventures. COVØST 19 was yesterday and completed in strong winds. Not the most sensible thing I’ve ever done on a bike, I’ll admit that.
Today was a far more sedate affair and involved lots of new roads and a trip to the Beautiful village of Great Tew. If any of you UK (Midlands-Cotswold) riders get the opportunity to visit, I would highly recommend.
Yesterday temps were in the 90s so I did what any sane person would do, went for a 15 minute PR on a long segment. Nailed 2nd place 17 seconds behind my buddy Pat who is a TT monster so I feel good.
Super happy with how consistent power is getting, I averaged 285 for both segments (one overlaps the other)
Today was cooler in the 70s so I did a longer and easier spin
This weekends rides:
Saturday’s Ride: 52+miles
Sunday’s Ride: Strava didn’t record then entire ride (probably due to old iPhone w/old battery) so I mapped it on google maps. Trusty Planet Bike Protege bike computer recorded 100.7 miles and 7hrs. 33min. ride time. I’m not breaking any speed records, but I really enjoy these long rides and exploring new roads!
Tried sun sleeves for the first time on this weekends rides and they worked great!
Great weekend!

Loving the colour of your jersey. Could you let me know who makes it, please?
