Where did you ride OUTSIDE today (2021)

It might almost be worth it! I feel very fortunate living where I do, there are things to be desired but the quality of riding (all genres) is not one to complain about. Having the parkway so close is wonderful and something I really enjoy about winter riding.

@mountainrunner wanna trade houses for a month? Half way between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe, out the door in one direction its uphill 115 miles / 185km to the crest of the Sierras, about 14,000 feet / 4300m of climbing. Just a little farther and you can be chilling in South Lake Tahoe

This weekend was meant to be a two day bikepacking event in Mid-Wales but the C-word put paid to that so it became a virtual event. Yesterday it snowed for most of the day so we dragged out the fat bikes.

About -5C to start with and got to about freezing by the time we got back. Grand total of 25Km with 600m of ascent.

You had a better time outside @bobw than me. I put the WTB Senderos on thinking the climb I aborted yesterday would be fine to ascend. It was, the tires had much better traction, of course. However, beyond there, out of the protection of the woods, the powder was fairly deep at 8" or more in spots. Soft, silky powder that probably would’ve been perfect for a fat tire but was getting really annoying on my 47mm tires and would only get worse as I proceeded. So, I turned back, crossed the river and started up the other side of the valley and again, the virgin powder was just too annoying. So, I turned around cruised along the river toward Zurich for a while. 21 miles, 1800’, and -5 to -7 C. The Garmin said it was “unproductive” and I think I would agree but it wasn’t bad. Saw more horse riders than bikes.

In the distance is the range I intended to get to after crossing the river. Overall, the snow would be great for a run, which is what I’ll do tomorrow.

I think we’re good. :grinning: Being born, raised, and having spent 80% of my life (to date) in SoCal, you’ve got it great up there. By the way, why not look at AlpenBrevet, a great chance to compare riding the Sierras with the Alps.

I’ve tried riding that more that a few times on my fatbike. Usually ends up as hike-a-bike. And even going downhill you need to pedal. It’s a nice landing when you fall though!

Galena +1 on the Folsom South Canal today. Dense fog and 35-40F but didn’t want to ride the hamster wheel today.

@chrisb82 it was better at 1pm when I left EG, have been hitting the delta pretty heavy and need to start heading east and riding in the foothills. Originally wanted to ride to Folsom/Rescue via the south canal and then called an audible and rode to Rancho Murietta instead. Ran into my sister-in-law and some family friends out walking in Murietta. As usual saw a bunch of deer, sadly didn’t take pictures today.

Hey, you’re in my ‘hood! I complain about NorCal “winter” and these other people are riding in snow and sub zero temps…But mid 30’s and thick fog is cold!

I’ve done my fair share of 30F morning rides but yeah I’ll admit to waking up at sunrise to fog and went right back to bed LOL. Early afternoon it was 46F and sunny until I hit the Jackson Highway, thankfully the cloud cover lifted and it was a fantastic afternoon until I got home and wife was working in the yard so I spent another 2 hours still wearing my thermal bib tights. Still thawing out from being out for 5 hours, feels like coming home from a cold day skiing

Fog and heavy wind are the two things that keep me inside, the former for predawn starts and the latter for whenever. Obviously, fog and headlights don’t mix well. There are times when the fog is so thick it’s nearly impossible to run before dawn. Trees have a propensity to fall in these forests in high winds. At around 18mph, the warning lights go on around the lake and you generally want to stay out of the forests. Riding the trails after a high-wind is “exciting” because you don’t know if around that next corner there’s a fallen tree.

Disappointed with today’s effort. That said, it was 0 degrees C, ‘felt like’ -4 (according to Strava data). The full climb up through Wendover woods via Aston is kicking my arse atm. To paraphrase the Kaiser Chiefs, I predict a diet, I predict a diet.

My last day of freedom before work tomorrow saw me load up the outdoors version of Tehipite. From -4deg C and snow yesterday, it was a misty 6deg C today and the visibility was poor especially in the hills which were lined by slushy ice.

It was cloudy, grey and chilly when I rolled out this morning. I started climbing almost immediately and after a few kilometers of uphill I reached the clouds, a kilometer or so later I could see the sun and the blue skies. It’s a cool feeling to ride under thick clouds, then enter then and finally be above them and look down at it

Guatemala? Beautiful!

That is correct

A bluebird day on the bike. 5 hrs in the snow. Mostly riding. Some pushing. Needed to adjust air pressure 4 or 5 times to suit the conditions. 3-7psi range. Mainly endurance pace - but some of the soft spots took a lot more effort to get through. Beats Pettit on the trainer!!

Pettit outside; just focused on body position and keeping constant pressure on the pedals. Actually wasn’t ridiculously cold and was nice to get outside.

yesterday was 66F / 19C and sunny, welcome to NorCal!

Today? 48F / 9C with dense fog until 2pm… Left the house at 3:45pm and nice sunny ride for 20 minutes until I hit the fog:

sunglasses/face/arms/gloves were soaked when I got home, living the dream on two wheels!
