Where did you ride OUTSIDE today (2021)

Grail in road setup??

My med-long Friday ride; Z2 with some 7-8/10 efforts on the hills.

An enjoyable but eventful day for me

To start my power meter wasn’t detected. After I met folk though I realised that I was using my 130 to link with the Varia and doh, the 130 and 4iii wasn’t paired.

I got as far as the Wansford to Kings Cliff road and something flew of my bike. I quickly realised what it was, it was the front brake and the caliper bolt had come off.

I told the group to go and I would cautiously trundle home and reset the Garmin. 5miles later I decided though to try a lbs, it would avoid me having to go brakeless into the city. The shop sorted it in minutes and I thought I’d try to catch the group. I eventually did as it started to break up but a couple of friends were going further so I tagged on after about 40miles into a surprisingly strong wind.

It was a bit too long for my small garmin and the battery died. So after I left them I booted up Strava on the phone.

Bike fit on Thursday, long overdue and it confirmed my terrible bike fitting skills. Five weeks of suffering is finally over.

Celebrated with a 30 minute hard push and a bunch of easy trophies given the extended 6+ months of foundation development.

The usual route, nothing interesting to see and this picture gives a partial hint to the windy conditions here:

Literally nothing to stop the wind for 60+ miles.

The Fens just east of Peterborough are similar there nothing to stop the wind for 100mile of land (after that it’s the flat sea) :hushed: I’d rather have a 30-40mph gust in the hills of Scotland than 13-14mph wind in the Fens :-1:

Missed the morning sun, got the afternoon winds.

2+ hour zone2 ride. At the end I spotted the beavers :beaver: in the creek. One was curious and swam up to see me:

and the other one swimming away

Paradigm is a great shop, and Charlie is building me a bike as we speak. It’s just a bit too far from me to ride up there often, but it looks like a nice part of the world for cycling.

Two rides today. First was a quickie on the road because the wife wanted to ride to brunch. She originally said she wanted to go out in the afternoon, so I planned on 3 or so hours targeting some specific hills (with spectacular views, btw) with the light vehicle traffic of a Sunday morning. But she switched to wanting to go for a ride to eat in Zurich and I wasn’t going to say no because she hasn’t wanted to ride the bike in ages (and not just because of the cold temps). So, I rushed out for an hour on a local hill. With the down, up, up, down, turn around and up, down… it looks like a good candidate route for TR intervals. Garmin did give me a +7 for my performance conditioning, so I have that going for me.

Views from the road bike session (the two without me are basically at the same spot, see the cross walk, but clearly one is while going up and the other down):

The second ride was a casual gravel cruise down to Zurich for pancakes and eggs (me) and eggs benedict (her). I opted not to have a “breakfast beer” as they are offered on the menu. The power spikes are inclines / hills where the wife “forgets” she’s on an e-bike and drops me.

Parking the bike. Loads of bikes parked here left and right of us. Beyond, the trails are filled with walkers, runners (many wearing “Zurich Virtual Marathon” shirts, so I guess that was today), and dogs. Zurich proper is behind me.

And yes, there are a couple of fishermen in the river in the distance.

The main hill I intended to ride today has this for a view. I took this today from the car on my way to pick up the daughter from an overnighter at her friend’s house out of the frame to the left. Loads of walkers and cyclists (of all levels) on this barely the size of one car two-way road. Next weekend.

It was a perfectly nice (chilly but we bundle!) day when I started and a frozen hellscape of sleet and hail when I finished. I was grateful for every single piece of foul weather kit and equipment I had.

(From when it was still a perfectly nice day.)

Hit the road yesterday on a new route - 100km in 3hr15m.

First time with power outside so was getting used to the pedals (Assimoa’s) and the new cleats (clipping in!) and learning to try and keep some resemblance of target watts ahead of my attempt at an outside workout this morning.

I got a bit carried away and seems like I had some “diamonds in the legs” picking up a KoM and a couple of top 10’s. Cracking day for it and was great to see the indoor power translating outside.

Power all over the place  It was nice to have a non structured ride.

Felt pretty good after my 2nd Pfizer shot on Friday and wanted to try some intervals after some KJs. Rode high Z2 for ~50ish minutes and did a few 4-min VO2 max intervals. I could only make it through 3 of them.

Capped it off with 15 min @ FTP after picking up some cheese for tonight’s dinner at the request of my wife. I’d say that’s a productive ride.

The last 10-min hurt—those 800-1000w surges add up.

The social ride headed upto Rutland today which is about as hilly as you get here within reasonable cycling distance.

I’ve pulled it together into one ride but it was actually 3 recordings. The Garmin IQ app for the Varia (mybiketraffic.com) must really kill the battery of the 130 so after about 2hours it died and it was another half hour before we stopped and I started the phone app. So I got my mates track and cropped it to that half hour. Subsequently I merged the 3 parts together in GOTOES.

Nice! That’s a stout ride from where I sit…where the longest rise is 3 minutes. I kid you not.

90’-100’ per mile would be a good day for me.
