I had Altair in my calendar for tonight but from low’s of 4deg C last week it was high of 21deg C today and I changed it to an outside workout, and did a Holme loop after dark. I stopped at the lake and took some pics and tried a few different modes and the conclusion is I need a better phone camera
Decided that I’d go out and do some SS work today since I did climbs yesterday. Felt strong considering I suffered yesterday and went out to dinner with friends last night, but it’s hard to hold a steady wattage here with so many ups and downs. Really love riding here.
So cool!!
Nothing special, just the 2nd workout of my recovery week on the same route as yesterday down to Holme and back on the new cyclepath along side the A15 old and new. You can feel the weather is changing yet again with it 1degC colder (17deg C) than after dark yesterday (18deg C) with a stronger fresher wind. The only annoying thing was round one of the bends a mini digger and mini tipper truck were blocking the cycle path and they had torn up the wide verge. They could have at least signed you onto the road before the bend :-/
I had my eye on a 200km audax ride from Maroochydore to Gympie & back which is happening tomorrow, but the temperature’s supposed to hit 35°C there, with humidity, & likely storms. Considering I had to withdraw because of heat at 31°C & dry 7 weeks ago, I decided tomorrow is a fool’s errand. So I snuck in a permanent today. “Southern Saunter”. It “only” made it to 27°C today but Lezyne measured 33°C on road.
Started out from Toowong along the Western Freeway, linked up with a part of the popular river loop circuit, a roll down the cycleway next to the SE Freeway. Off the cycleway was this nice patch of pathway through Slacks Ck.
Over to Victoria Point
Then Cleveland Point, then Wellington Point:
Up to Lota… Oops, creek crossing was flooded by a king tide
… so I made a 6km detour. Zero interest in risking the integrity of my components by submerging them in salt water.
Along the waterfront through Wynnum, crossed the Brisbane River on the Gateway, up to Nudgee (the last stretch to Nudgee had a pretty fierce headwind; 200w full aero gave me 24kph), then through the mosquito-ridden Boondall Wetlands
Then back in on the cycle path I’ve used quite a bit. Felt like I somehow managed a tailwind for most of the riding in both directions to Boondall & back. I’ll take it.
Through the city & out to Toowong. Distance to complete the audax itself was 208km & the commutes added a total of 17 extra km.
Feeling accomplished, a bit of saddle soreness, yeah tired but surprisingly not wrecked. Toying with doing parkrun tomorrow… on a red day.
Consumed 6.3L of water & about 750g of sugar.
My commute was pitch black to the station then 11.7miles of that at the other end. I managed to get to the station in the light tonight but it looks like I’ll need the lights again when I get of the train.
Awesome ride. Enjoy those doughnuts!
Haha, thanks! Maybe tomorrow.
Parkrun today.
Official time for the 5k was 22’43". Warmup was 1½k & I arrived 45 seconds before the start. Northerly winds today, hotter as expected, very sunny course, so the second half (southbound) was uncomfortable. Took a bidon on the run & drank some, also tipped some over me.
A slight change to my group ride today. It was pouring, which in the past wasn’t a problem but these days it plays havoc with my neuropathy so I had a lie in. 4 hardy souls still went out though and after I was woken by the group WhatsApp chat I decided to meet them at the cafe on my commuter.
The other change was that we got to the pub too early and visited another where I had a pint of this.
Before having a Poretti which placed me in the nice sweet spot of circa 80%max HR for the 10miles home.
Last Sunday I did Rhine Gravel Rallye with a friend that just started biking this year so was a pretty nice ride and not to hard for me ( but he is already decently for on the bike considering he has 20+ years of running/ trail running experience). Was a nice route through the hills and then along the Rhine and back over a few hills. Really relaxed atmosphere.
Yesterday I did the Gravel Race Bern. Which is 50k. It’s a really well organized event the whole route is well signposted. The course is a lot of fun it’s very rarely more then a minute or so straight lots of corners and up and down. No real long clean mbs lots of short punchy efforts. Mixture of gravel, forest paths and some more cyclocross grass sections. And a few stairs. One section was super muddy and unrideable. Really felt it, that I didn’t do that much over the last month still went out hard and payed a bit in the second hour. Was about 5m faster then last year but they also removed 2 bottlenecks where you lost a lot of time last year if you were a mid pack rider.
Ireland and the west coast of the UK got hit by a big storm. By the time it got over to us in the East Midlands the winds had fallen to 40mph and my morning ride was cancelled. After it passed through I had to go out to collect my car from Elton. For some reason I went passed it to Nassington, Woodnewton, Kings Cliffe and did a lap of Fineshade and picked it up on the way back.
I got back just before dusk and started to clean the bike.
20mins later you can’t see a spot of dirt on it
Love the car, but I have to admit I’m surprised to learn you own one as much as you ride!
Rode with the wife on Friday. We made it short because there were a lot of black clouds and rain forecasted. Got to ride in a few great areas I hadn’t seen before and saw some beautiful rows of fall leaves. We finished just in time for me to get the dog out for a quick walk before the rain started. No pics as a result.
Today’s hike started very foggy, but we quickly rose out of it and got some great open views of the Flatirons. Mostly mellow ups and downs, but hiking 10 miles still leaves the legs sore and earned a voodoo donut.
The only thing my actual car has in common with that Aston is the colour. I drive a 2008 Toyota Yaris
That was a very good bait & switch.
- Tell us you’re picking up your car
- Show us a photo of an Aston Martin
- Then reveal “I drive a 2008 Toyota Yaris”
Got me.
This past weekend, I did a 3 day bikepacking trip in the Black Hills area of South Dakota. I hadn’t spent much time in this part of the country before, and I was surprised at how beautiful it was. I’ll definitely be back in the future.
130 miles and 13k feet of climbing. A mix of weather - from below freezing and snow to 70F and Sun. A mix of trails - from graded rail trails, to chunky 4x4, to sweet single track.
There were enough sources of water along the trail where I had to carry a max of 4L on the bike at any given point. Helped lighten the load vs desert riding, but my bike still probably weighted 60+ lbs.
Everything went well - my bike, equipment, fitness all worked out. A great three days on the bike
That’s looks like a cool trip !!
Windy this morning, so I decided to hike when I had planned to bike. By the time I got to the trail, winds were pretty calm. Live and learn!
Looking down into Boulder
