Even from a Christian calendar standpoint, Monday is the first day.
On the seventh day, God rested makes Sunday the seventh day, not the first.
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Certainly for Catholics in the UK, the Sabbath has been a Sunday. Thus Monday was the first day of the week, and Sunday the holy day at the end of the week where you rested.
This is reflected in that till the late 90s, Sunday opening wasn’t a thing for many UK supermarkets and larger stores. Laws forbade it. Indeed I worked for a retailer where one of the ordering systems created in the 1980s had no concept of a Sunday. It only knew about 6 days, Monday to Saturday.
Reading the link its the Gregorian and Hebrew calendars that says its on a Sunday and that is probably what is getting used by the Catholic church but for me I prefer the Monday and disagree with the significant 47.6% who say its Sunday
Im a Catholic so I guess you are right. To my my mind though the different Christian faiths are all Christian faiths at the end of the day
Yep and if you visit the Western Isles of Scotland you’ll be strongly criticised for cycling on a Sunday (as it’s a day of rest).
I can believe it having been brought up on the other side of Scotland.
Good grief. In some places thems fighting words!
I used to wonder the same thing when I first began structured training.
I think the best answer is:
because it doesn’t matter.
For many many many years my workout weeks were always Sunday through Saturday. This is a standard week so it seemed “logical.” At some point not to long ago (maybe when I started TR last summer?) it changed to Monday-Sunday.
Realistically, particularly for people that do their long rides on the weekend, this gives a ton more flexibility because you have that Saturday or Sunday and it’s still part of that same week. If the weather is poor or plans come up, you can easily bump it between Saturday or Sunday. That doesn’t work quite the same on a Saturday-Sunday schedule.
The first day of the week being Sunday has grown to be a cultural construct in the USA. Saturday is the seventh day (the Sabbath day). Scripture defines Sunday as the first day of the week, as Christ was resurrected early on the first day of the week.
I can assure you all that the structure of our week has nothing to do with Jesus.
As some have already mentioned, a large majority of our users work Monday - Friday jobs, and keeping the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) together just makes sense for those athletes.
If anyone feels like this structure is a hindrance to their training for some reason, let me know.
Allegedly
FWIW, I’d like the ability to have a plan with workouts every other day, even though the days would alternate between alternate weeks. I don’t think there’s reason to preclude that option.
All the calendars at work and in my home and my computer(s), phone, TV, TV guide, diaries (remember them) all start the week on a Monday.
Love from the UK.
(I have an app on my phone the default is Monday but you can chose Sunday as a personal preference)
We can argue about this, about the metric or weight systm and driving on the left side or right side etc. and everyone has is point.
Maybe it could be a user defined thing but because of the weekend days beeing generally off work dauys like some have mentioned it doesnt even make much sense for anyone unless their work free days are friday and saturday.
Even athletes with rotational work free days wouldnt get much of starting their weeks on sunday.
Dunno. Utter chaos can be good for the soul too!
No hindrance at all, but I would say, at least where I am from, calendars read Sun to Sat, so at least having the option for it to read that way would be great. Thanks!
