They are track and raceday tires. I don’t think they really make sense on the Track, where most people ride 150Psi +, which these aren’t even rated for.
There is always a trade off of puncture protection vs speed.
Veloflex Record is Ultra fast, but zero protection.
Corsa Speed - 5W slower - but added protection
Turbo Cotton/ GP5000 - 5W slower - protection belt
and so on.
As long as a less sturdy tire is more fast too, I think it is worth a consideration.
If a tire is just thinner, but not faster, that’s bad.
Yeah, the tire completely delaminated. I will keep on testing them. At the current rate, I’d be willing to risk this for a race. If punctures were to become more frequent, then I am more doubtful.
FWIW : Had mine since last year, raced the end of season till now, some couple 100mile - 200km days.
All good so far (eyeballing 500-1000 miles)
~140lbs, in CO (where I don’t get flats…ever, knock on wood)
I came across some thread with the testing done, claiming new version of the Record is 0.6W slower. Can’t remember the testing speed. I guess standard TT testing speed, which is 50 km/h. Newest version has some minimal reinforcement on the sidewalls if I understood correctly. But it’s not a puncture protection belt. Apparently it is as fast as Corsa Speed currently.
We have 3 juniors on Veloflex Record riding TT and no flats so far during last few races.
Our Conti team is partly sponsored by Veloflex so we get tires and tubulars for free. The training clinchers, Corsa Evo last quite long and I guess the thread is vulcanized, not glued as it doesn’t come off like products coming from Vittoria Lions factory: Vittoria Corsa, Specialized Turbo Cotton, Bontrager R4 320 and Wolpack Race.
What pressure do you fill them to for road racing? I just got a set. The smooth tire recommends 9-10 bar which is really high while the profiled says 8-10 bar 8 bar is about 116 psi.
" Veloflex renewed all their tires in Q3 2020 and the Record now makes use of a “natural rubber and silica” compound instead of the “natural rubber exclusive” compound that was used before Q3 2020. The use of silica increases wet grip but it comes at the cost of a 10-15% increase in rolling resistance."
The natural rubber exclusive tires are the smooth surface tyres. If you believe the data provided by Veloflex Record (silica compound) Rolling Resistance Review for the post Q3 2020 tires, the earlier “natural rubber exclusive” being 10-15% faster are the fastest tires you could buy.
Aerocoach RR data shows this, likely testing pre Q3 2020 tires.
Im selling my scotts frame and veloflex tyres as ive done majior injury to my knees and for the foreseeable future the dr here has said no more riding bikes or running or reqlly any sports
