Looks like the TR casing is no faster than the SCT casing…which seems strange but it agrees with bicyclerollingresistance.com’s finding that super race is no faster than super ground. Swapped only the front tire for these runs, kept the rest constant
Amazingly consistent results between the two. At least on the terrain and pressures you tested seems like a no brainer to run the SCT’s then.
Looks like a new month of BRR voting is live
Here are the winners of last month’s voting round:
- Pirelli P Zero Race TLR 4S (SpeedCore) 32-622
- Continental Race King Protection 29x2.2
- Maxxis Reaver 120TPI EXO/TR 700x40c
- Hutchinson Touareg TLR 700x40c
- Maxxis Rekon Race MaxxSpeed (new compound) 29x2.4
Are we putting our collective weight behind the Kenda Rush SCT 29x2.4?
Only other one I see I’m interested in is the Wolfpack Speed back at zero…
I put this months vote again on the Kenda Rush SCT. Would still love to see how it matches up against the other fast XC tires.
Thanks for the suggestion and organizing! Putting my vote there!
Ok - my vote is in for the Rush too.
Just voted for the Rush again as well.
I will say that subjectively, I’ve been a fan of the Wolfpack Speed 29x2.4 TLR, I’m considering ordering another set or two to have them on hand from Germany.
I have them on a separate wheelset and It’s been my go-to for all my general purpose and rougher riding along side my race kings which I’ve been using for Leadville and similar. I’d encourage anyone to try a pair, and maybe we see if we can get them tested in the future. Volume feels HUGE after swapping from the RK though
How’s the speed vs race king?
All of this is pretty subjective, so take this with a grain of salt.
The Speed has a lot more volume which has made it a lot nicer on anything rougher. More durable for me, I tore a sidewall on a Race King the very first time on my local trails, while knock on wood I haven’t had an issue with the Speed. Weight isn’t a ton more - 640g each for the 2.4"? I haven’t attempted to quantify, but the Speed doesn’t feel much slower. I did take it on a 100+ road / gravel training ride and a whole bunch of rail trail / gravel rides and it didn’t feel out of place, although a little more bouncy at times? Feels like it has more grip, but it’s not like I’m ever testing the limits of the RK. I did manage to wash out the front of the Speed once on loose rock in a corner and go down, but I can’t necessarily pin that on the tire.
That’s about all I’ve got.
I have to agree. I think the Wolfpack tyres are the best available right now. It’s one of those things, I want to tell everyone, but don’t want to make it harder to get them.
My only reservation has been the lack of a “protection” layer. He says that the ToGuard is up to the task, and honestly I have no evidence to suggest otherwise. I still picked up a pair of Schwalbe Super Ground tyres (Rocket Ron and TB) for my next race which is in a particularly harsh on tyres environment.
Maybe I should order a couple more sets, shut up about them, and just do some more of my own testing
WP speed is indeed a fast and light tyre - 630g in 2.4 flavour, but for this year i will use a Cross 2.4 and a Race 2.4 (moved from the front) for more grip and versatility
Looks like the Kenda Rush should be getting some votes this month. Hopefully we can get it up to where it will be tested soon. Could then consider making the Wolfpack Speed the next group effort after that to vote up.
I am running the cross front and race rear. Before I was running the gen 1 Forekaster front and rear. I felt the Wolfpack were slower for the same pressure but accidentally ran them at a higher pressure one day and was faster everywhere compared to previous. The race rear is showing lots of wear on the rear after a year, I’m probably going back to Forekaster for the winter as I have a new set to use but will probably go WP speed for the summer and try Race/Race next winter.
I’m in Central Texas where the trails are mostly hard packed or loose rock so I wanted something with a little heavier tread than the Recon Race that I rode front and rear last year. I went with the Ardent Race from Maxxis and I am super impressed with this tire so far. The increase in rolling resistance feels negligible, yet the increase in traction is significant. I’m running the 2.2s because the max suggested tire width for my rim width is 2.3, but I’m going to try a 2.35 as soon as I wear one out.
I briefly matched an Ardent Race rear with the regular Ardent as a front, and F*** that tire. Maxxis needs to remodel it or discontinue it. The dead spot in traction is insane and unsafe.
@CoryE Try a Rekon (not race) up front. I have the Ardent Race in the rear and run Rekon up front and like that setup. I am in the northeast and the setup works for me in a variety of conditions.
I just looked them both up for comparison and they look almost identical
It does look like the Recon may have a slightly deeper tread. The Recon appears to have more siping in the side lugs.
I’m a bit concerned about going to a 2.4 on my rims that suggest a max of 2.3. New rims probably aren’t in my budget for a while
Recon:
Ardent Race:
Having used both, ikon has much more grip than ardent. I would probably race it over the ardent even if I knew for a fact it was noticeable slower. In my opinion, the ardent is just a bad design that hasn’t been killed yet. I would definitely pick a mezcal over ardent on a grip front, maybe even an aspen, just because it makes sense how it handles.
With tire width and rim width, ignore the maximum tire for a rim. Big tires are still better. I ran ikon 2.35s on a 21 internal run for years and thought it was a great setup.
I’m not saying that wide rims aren’t an improvement( as I look at my 30mm rims), but a good high volume tire is still better on a little rim
I use to live in North Texas. I was always really happy with fasttrak front and renegade rear. For some reason every time i saw someone having a flat it was always maxxis tires.
