You do what you need to do to stay engaged. That is the best plan.
However, a season of racing before the racing season? The impact is likely determined by age, training, history, A race goals, etc.
@hubcyclist nailed it – racing is hard and can provide a stimulus, but it can also be unpredictable and may not necessarily lead to the training benefit you’re ultimately looking for.
It’s a bit of a balancing act. We’d say that racing once in a while to stave off boredom certainly isn’t a problem! Just keep in mind that if it’s the only intensity you’re getting – or even the majority of the intensity in your plan – you may not progress as ideally as you might if you were to prioritize structured workouts that will lead you to your goals.
